Hi

I need a test pump for a boiler test, around 5 inch gauge loco size. Has anyone got a good design for a pump that I could make in a day or so. I have all the normal tools one would expect.

Hi Michael ,

Really any side tank or tender pump for a 5 inch gauge engine would serve . There have been many good and bad designs published but most of them basically functioned .

But what are the good designs, what makes a good pump. I would like to spend my time makeing a good design then a bad design.

I'm in the process of building a boiler test rig Mike, although it's not quite finished. I generally based my pump on the design published in EIM May/June 2009. I modified it to use what I had available (brass pump body, aliminium block and stainless steel handle & ram ect. It uses O rings in the valves rather than trying to seat a stainless ball effectively. I found it easy to size the pump to suit the materials to hand and apart from my time – it's cost me nothing. Was going to have a go at testing my own boiler, Got hold of a motorcycle front brake master cylinder. But like a lot of my "projects" thats as far as I got.
