Leafing through somev old ME mags I came across an article by Clifford Hall in volume 132 number.3304 describing an engine that uses steam power without a boiler. It relies on injected water flashing to steam in an externally heated cylinder.

I have searched the web but have not found anything. There is a patent number, 923235 which I assume is a British patent. Haven't found the patent yet.

It seems that Mr. Hall made several engines using this principle. Has anyone else made one?
