Any recommendations for material for a gudgeon pin around 16mm in dia for a piston in an air compressor?

      Was thinking maybe EN8 steel……

The piston is ally and so is the conrod, I think the pin is fully floating…..

          John,

If it was me … I would "Make From" a commercial Gudgeon Pin.

Assuming that there are any knowledgeable Store-Men left

            Michael,

Nice idea, I was trying to avoid buying…lol…

Having thought about it, arent they hardened and ground finished?

On the model IC engines I usually go with silver steel which is the material that is commonly specified.

They should be hardened and ground. A piston supplier should be able to sort one out for you or try a bit of linear shafting from a bearing supplier. No need to use circlips you can turn PTFE buttons for the ends if it is easier.

Can't recommend strongly enough, the purchase of a ceramic turning tip. You can turn 62Rc easily. And remove quite a lot of material if you are patient, even convert 1" shank to 20mm on milling cutters.

I would go with EN24T and use as supplied. Won't be fully hardened but it will/should last a long time.

Hardened and tempered silver steel should be fine, drill it out for lightness and make domed brass 'mushrooms' if you can't source PTFE.
