      Although it seems counter intuitive, when using auto chucks it sometimes helps with the grip factor if you fully insert the drill and then pull it out about 1/2 or 1mm. Because when the chuck grips, it pulls the drill up into the chuck, (by a very small amount), and if the drill bottoms out it prevents this movement which in turn prevents the rotation of the locking mechanism. Just a consideration in conjunction with all the other posts.

        If you have a Jacobs type chuck two keys used together at the same time do work a lot better than one, more than twice the gripping power, and easier on your hands. Also tightening a single key in all the key holes in succession will tighten a chuck a lot firmer, you will notice the outer ring with the gear teeth on it move further around. Particularly if the chuck is a non ball bearing type Jacobs chuck as most are. The problem is friction within the chuck body, both methods help overcome it.
