Not directly model engineering related but perhaps someone one here has an answer.

I have recently been servicing and fitting some linear bearings to a couple of CNC routers. I have encountered a problem in that there is not enough space between the rail and the alloy plate that the bearings are mounted on to get access to the grease nipples with a standard grease gun end.

This is a problem because the linear bearings can't be pre-greased prior to assembly as they are fitted with plastic "keepers" that are not supposed to be removed prior to installation on the rails.

My own grease guns and any that I can find all have ends that are 15 mm in diameter. To get onto the grease points that are there it would need one about 11mm diameter.

There is not space to unscrew the existing nipples (they are 45 degree angled ones) so adding an extension to the bottom of the nipple is a non starter

Anyone got any thoughts as to how to grease these bearings?

      Thanks

      Martin

You could try an old fashioned pus grease gun, with an end similar to a Myford oil gun, or one can also get adaptors for conventional high pressure grease guns.
They come with a variety of ends, including hemispherical and needle ended, as well as slightly slimmer 3 claw, though the narrowest I've seen of those is about 12mm.
Here's an example just for illustration..

I think I'd just make my own needle nose adaptor out of a grease nipple, a bit of hollow bar and a brass needle/pointed end; I've done this for one of my flexi oil cans for use with ball oilers.

            Bill,

Thank you for the info. My searches on Ebay etc didn't find the set that you highlighted. I've now ordered a set and I'll see how they get on. If they don't manage to do the job then I'll be making one of my own.

            Thanks again
