I have been reading Mike Robinson’s Thread on Graphite Yarn September 2009. I am currently restoring a two cylinder engine (See Pic)
There are eight seals on the pistons and valves in some cases up to an 1/8 inch thick. I am not sure what the material is, could it be Graphite String or even some type of felt. Anyone any ideas? if so where I could purchase such.
In Mike’s thread people suggest using Plumbers tape. Two points here, one it would take a lot of tape, two surely String or Felt would retain some oil, hence lubricating the shaft

      Any Ideas please
      Fred

Graphited yarn is the usual, and should be available from some of the trade suppliers…we can get it here in NZ although I suppose that won’t help you much. I suspect it could be made if necessary from cotton yarn and graphite grease, I don’t think it is exactly a hi tech space age material.

          regards

As you say plumbers PTFE tape would need a lot of rolls but most of the usual ME suppliers keep PTFE gland packing in various sizes as well as graphite yarn.

            Try Bruce engineering, Blackgates, GLR

Gland packing. Get some COTTON string (none of your old plastic stuff) pop it in a small pot with a load of Molybdenum die Sulphide based grease which has had a few drops of STP or Wynns oil additive stirred in to it.

Get the cotton string well impregnated and use. I have made several such stuffing boxes with success.

I have both string and grease, but never thought of combining them.]
