I have bought a governor for a Stuart S50 engine. and firstly I found that the inlet/outlet was in the wrong direction to the pulley and as the bolts were tiny and close to parts. I had to make a socket spanner and find attached pictures under. the socket was made by drilling a 2.5 hole in the end of a brass rod and then pressing a cut down piece of Allen key in a vice, to form the socket. With a bit of clearance on the shaft turned and a hole in side for handle.
Also can anyone tell me which way the feed to the engine should be. does the steam go in the bottom or in the side as there are no instructions and I hope someone has used one. Also what pulley and belt should i use.
I would imagine that that the 90 dog fitting would be fitted to the steam chest as it would make the governor rigidly fitted and the steam inlet from below as it already seems to have a pipe fitting attached to it. And possibly turn the top half of the governor round 180 dog to put the belt pulley more over the top of the engine making for an easier belt run.
A lot will depend on whether it has a proper balanced valve inside but I would say steam in at the side and the vertical pipe at the bottom goes into the steam chest
I've got one of those on my Stew Hart mill engine mounted directly to the steam chest thus:
and here on the finished model:
I initially drove it with a Mamod traction engine drive spring but, not surprisingly, found it a bit "springy" giving an erratic drive. I have now replaced that with a flat rubber belt 2.5mm wide and 0.25mm thick. Unfortunately no picture of that. And before you ask I don't recall where I got it, probably from e-bay. The pulley size was, for me, trial and error until I got the governor spinning at a rate that I thought suitable. For me that was 12mm dia.
Just had a search in a few safe places in the workshop and found the left over belts I have. Definitely from the bay, the packet label has a load of Chinese looking writing. I have a few spare varying from 260mm total length down to 90mm so if you let me know how long you need I can possibly help.
