I’m after a few pointers of what people think I am best doing to locate a sheet metal shear (Thread version) and a Bending unit.  I’ve had a look at Warco, Chester etc. at what they have and am aware of the equipment they have.  What I’m not too convinced of is that the stated cutting capacity is under 1mm in steel.>>

         >>

What is everyone’s experience of the best equipment to get for sheet metal work?  I’m looking for something around the 1000mm length capacity and really upto 2 – 3mm?>>

         >>

        Thanks,>>

        Ant>>

At that thickness I would think you should be looking at hydraulic shears and the same for a press brake. Probable have to be second hand to keep the costs down

            Ant,

As Jason has said, at those sorts of thicknesses you are into the industrial machinery world.

It is bad enough trying to guilotine and bend 1mm steel of any length by hand (or foot), never mind 3mm.

Hi Ant, I’ve only ever used hydraulic guilotines but as far as bending is cocerned even hand folders made by the likes of Edwards industrial machines only have a capacity of 1.5mm for that sort of length. As Bogs says bending 1metre for example of 1mm isn’t exactly a push over, and these are usually heavy duty machines. Can’t say I’ve heard of any treadle guilotines much over 1.5mm/16swg. Above this sort of thickness you are really getting into what is termed as plate and not sheet metal.

              Regards Nick.

If you only have to do a one-off or even several-off, then no further use for machine, it would be far cheaper to pay a commercial outfit to do it for you and no machine to flog-off after!
Thats what I would do. Try looking thro Yellow Pages. If no luck locally, try YP further afield – local Library stock them.
                Good luck,
                John.

If my memory serves me properly from the specifications years ago, ” plate” started from 6mm upwards.

Following on from my previous comment I have just found this extract from the Aluminium Association website.

“Aluminum can be flat-rolled and re-rolled until it reaches the desired thickness or gauge. When the rolling process is stopped determines whether the final product will be plate (a quarter-inch thick or more), sheet (0.249 to 0.006 inch), or foil (less than 0.006 inch).”

Just had a look at Chesters catalogue and the do have a manual folder that it says has a max of 2.5mm (material not specified) and 1200 width its the “FAB Fold 48A”

As Len says the couple of times I’ve wanted 3mm sheet folded I went down to the lacal steel fabricators with some beer tokens
