'Good morning all, new member here.

As a young kid, I took bikes and lawnmowers apart to see how they worked, and gradually moved on to car engines and Hi-Fi systems. I have continued to be a very practical person, and taught myself to bend and solder copper plumbing, and have installed several domestic water and central heating systems over the years. I have also installed or renewed electrical wiring in houses I have owned.

My working background is in electronics and radio frequency transmission.

I am here because, after years of trying to cut joints and drill holes freehand for various DIY projects, (80% wood, 20% metal), I finally have the chance to equip a garage workshop. I am currently priming and painting the ceiling and concrete block walls, and putting up shelving. I will also paint the smooth concrete floor. My son recently gave me a 3D printer and I have just purchased a second-hand Meddings MF4/5 drill for restoration. The drill has a three phase motor, so after cleaning it up and assembling it; my next project will be to research inverters or maybe VFDs to run it.

Hello John and welcome. It looks as though you have plenty to keep you busy for a few weeks!

I have 2 VFDs and would be happy to give you details of them and the machinery that the drive, mind you, I'm no expert but, they work.

Welcome aboard shipmate ! If you have a question on ALMOST ANY subject there will be someone here who will be able to offer help or advice. For a low cost 3Ph operation from a single phase supply you might consider the STEINMETZ connection. While many are going for VFDs which is fine if you have a dual voltage motor and need the variable speed, otherwise a converter will work, is simple and will operate at 415v.

Dont forget power inverters exist as well ie 12vdc-230ac single phase.

My restoration will not be fast – there is a lot of DIY to be done to the house as well.

Could someone please point me towards a source of a manual for the Meddings – user instructions and spares diagrams?

I have searched on-line, but have not found a source yet. (I am happy to pay a modest amount if required).

As as octogenarian I find getting around digital stuff quite tricky and this site is no exception

My name is Fred and I make model steam boats and design and make all the plant from scratch and have done so for many years. I am also interested in Flash steam.

I have a digital subscription (£50) to Model engineer and seem to be able to read magazine articles on my desk top. In the past it was possible to print an article which interested me so that I could read it by my fireside. I am not interested in every article, mostly steam related things.

If I do want to print any article I now find that I cannot do so. I wonder if that means I need to upgrade to digital + print.

I contacted the site respondent to determine if this was indeed necessary and quoted a code but she did not seem to be able to advise me.

In despair I have given up and now simply read the articles at my desktop and presume that the older less tech savvy must simply do without printed copy, which does seem as shame.

My other interest is in the forum in which there seem some interesting discussions. I wondered if it is possible to copy any of these and paste them into Word or other word processors(I still use IBM Lotus Wordpro)

Otherwise I think subscribing to the magazine is not worth it for me.

I am a newcomer and would like someone to tell me, as a digital subscriber to what that gives me access I have been able to look at model engineer for some of the current magazines but if I try to look at any prior to my recent subscription they do not display. and I simply get a blank screen. I thought I would be able to access previous volumes? Is my subscription limited to the current volumes and if it allows access to previous volumes why does my subscription show blank pages.

I seem also unable to print out any articles which interest me as some articles do not and I would like to store articles of interest. Do I need a different subscription to be able to do this.

Is there a comprehensive set of user instructions as it is not immediately evident how to perform some actions which may be possible

Hi Fred. It is always best to start a new thread if you have a specific question to seperate it from the existing thread you have latched onto. Hopefully some one will come along to help you.
