For those who live in the country or go to the country NOW is the time for the GIANT PUFF BALL Cannot be mistaken for other fungi. If you are lucky enough to find one,5" dia is good, take it home, slice into 3/8" thick, must have white flesh, if brown it has gone over, and fry lightly in butter, then serve between 2 slices of brown or white bread. It has to tried – mushroom flavour but a bit stronger – superb ! Just eating one now ! Noel

Whilst not wishing to be a spoil-sport … do please read to the end of Grizzly Bear’s link:

”Breathing in the spores of this fungi can cause Lycoperdonosis a nasty lung disease so care should be taken when handling mature specimens.”

they are reputed to come at or near the same spot each year – they are freezable but make sure, as I didn’t, that they are doubly bagged as the taste will spread – quite strong + distinctive – apparently whole specimens just emerged are quite valuable if you have a local restaurant that does mushroom dishes.

Yup, my dad also used to eat puff balls. I used to stamp on them!

They are lovely, get a fair few round here but didn't find any this morning.

One of the farmers brought one down the pub last season.. is was over a foot in dia !! No one wanted to eat it though.. 'it'll be to old they grumbled..'

Mushrooms here were very early, we were getting them at end of July, never seen that before. They disappeared by end of August but are now returning.. got 5 nice ones on my lawn which I'm looking forward to eating. smiley

My father ran a pub near Hay on Wye and one night a local brought in an enormous puffball. It was quickly sliced up and cooked over the open fire before being devoured by appreciative regulars. 'Where'd you find that 'un Jonno?' one asked, back came the reply: 'E were in the churchyard as I came by'. Their faces were a picture
