I’m Ben, totally new to forums (at least posting in them).

Hi all, I’m Ben. Studying mechatronics at Uni, just bought a small lathe to make parts on. Trained in machine shop engineering at college five years ago. No idea what make the lathe is, as it has no identifying marks or plates, but it appears very old and very well made.

Hi Ben. Welcome aboard! It would be interesting to see a photo of your lathe. Regards. Nick.

Hello Ben and welcome. Can you elaborate on "mechatronics" for the sake of us old 'uns on here?

Yes, photos of your lathe would be handy so that it can be identified.

            Brian

Thanks for the welcome gents. I am currently trying to work out how to upload photos onto the forum. And Brian, mechatronics is basically a combination of mechanical, electronic and computer engineering. MECHA from mechanical, and TRONICS from electronics. As you may be able to tell, the computing aspect is my weakest point!

There are four holes beneath the chuck where I assume the original nameplate would have gone.

The lathe has been partially restored. The gears need bushings and spacers as they currently run with a lot of slop, especially those on the rear shaft.

The closest thing to an identifying mark on the lathe is this number stamped into the end of the bed.

                          Welcome Ben,

I think you need to read this FAQ before you waste more time posting pictures no-one else can see.

Our forum likes nothing better than identifying an obscure (or not so obscure) lathe, but we need some clues!

Hi Ben. I’m in wombwell so not far away from barnsley.
What kind of work are you thinking of doing? Mick

I'll have a look Neil and try again. It's odd, the photos in my posts are showing clear as day on my computer. 'Tis black magic! And Mick, I'm planning on using the lathe to make robotics and radio-controlled car parts. And anything else that takes my fancy!

I've created an album. The photos are in there. If someone could let me know if they can actually see them that would be great.

Ben – Yes, all visible in your album but nothing in your posts. Can't help with the lathe ident, I'm afraid … welcome aboard

Hello Ben and welcome – have a look at the http://www.lathes.co.uk/goodwin web page, looks like there are quite a few similarities between what's shown there and your machine.

Keith, you, Sir, are a legend! I've looked and my lathe is almost certainly a Goodwin "Progress". Apparently the headstocks were of very strong construction and there aren't many of this lathe still around. I had noticed the gap bed and thought it unusual on a small lathe. Any idea where I would go to get more information? The mighty Google is flummoxed by it…
