Particularly as the VDH kit from Hemingway is £167.50 and the sale item included a 3 jaw chuck ! 50p per hour, or less ?

Yes the box full of collets and accessories and the matching tailstock etc made the price a good deal for the buyer. I don't know how many hours I put into making mine but it was a lot, several hundred perhaps, and I just made the basic VDH with the small overarm tailstock and nothing else.
