GHT Drive Belt Material

Many years ago I made a George H. Thomas Universal Pillar Tool which has stood on the shelf for some years. I now want to use it and have found the 5mm diam plastic belt to be broken and crazed.

Do members have any advice on a good modern material to use: I expect to have to use a soldering iron to make the join.

Look for round polyurethane belting. Widely available, eg try ebay.

IIRC, mine is 5mm. dia.

It's worth taking a little trouble over joining. Heat a suitable piece of mild sleel, hold both ends in flat contact with it for a few seconds, then push together firmly. Takes a bit of a knack to get the joint well aligned, but practice make perfect!

Should add that cutting the ends as square as possible with a sharp blade aids a good join.

The material at ebay item 302149867073 is excellent quality, and very reasonably priced.

… Alternatives are, I'm sure, available.

O-ring cord is available in different diameters. It is cut to length and the ends are joined together with Loctite 406
