As it has been vernier calipers and micrometers that caused me to ask this question originally I finally got round to acquiring digital versions of both from eBay, (other outlets also exist A digital 0.01mm 150mm vernier and a digital 0.001mm 25mm micrometer. A joy to use and easy to read

I got one of these: **LINK**

I do 28 count cross stitching with it (0.9mm long stitches/796 per square inch). I have found that the magnifiers help at all ranges. If close up, and I normally don't need glasses, then I won't need them with these either. If long range where I need glasses, then wear glasses as usual. They just magnify rather than alter the focus length. Can only wear them for an hour or so as they put a weight on the forehead which stimulates a headache if used for longer than an hour. The LED is bright, and a set of 3 AAA batteries seem to last about 20 hours use. To see the picture I'm stitching and latest progress, take a look here: **LINK** It's good to be with the family & still making something. (Warning for them's of a delicate disposition, it's a tasteful picture of a young lady without many clothes)

        Regards,

        Richard

Being of a very non-delicate disposition I had to have look.

Very nice work, why the oddly running eyes though?

It's all part of the post-apocalyptic mythology Luis Royo is trying to create. His equivalent of the 4 horsemen have come to ravage the earth and Luz, being one of humanity's champions is there to restore life as it used to be by destroying whatever replaces the old order. In the mean time, though, Luz is so distressed by what she confronts that she weeps blood.

Somewhat hard to believe, but who cares when the images are so nice?

            Regards,

            Richard.

Thanks for the explanation, way out of my learning experience so I will look it all up.

I do admire your patience and obviously considerable skills in producing the Cross Stitch work involved.

The title mentions short sightedness, in which case my reply may be wrong.

I now suffer from presbyopia, or long sightedness due to old age. I use bi-focals, in fact two sets with differing lenses but specifically a close set for the workshop. On top of those, I then use a set of "easylife" clip on +2.5 lenses for really close reading, although to be honest, I can still see micrometers & dial calipers satisfactorily with just the normal lenses.

Mine came from the Telegraph Shop.

                Regards,

                Peter G. Shaw

Thanks, but I personally reckon the most difficult bit was writing the program to convert from the digital image to the chart. There are commercially available programs (and freebies too) to do the job, but I reckoned the results were inadequate, so went along & wrote a program to do the job properly without colour contours and permit easy blending of threads (where you use 2 different thread colours through the needle to fool the eye into seeing something half way between the two). The adds a further 12000 colours to the normal 446 that are available – not all blends of colour fool the eye, as contrasting colours tend to be seen more easily as separate threads.

                  Regards

                  Richard.

Was at the dermatologist today for routine checkup of psoriasis and with this thread in mind, remarked on his mini-binoculars attached to his spec's and enquired if they were readily available. Yes, said he and showed me the Zeiss marks, they are but at around 2,000Euros – I think I'll be sticking with the Optivisors at DA5 strength ! Another recommendation for them.

                      .

Yes, Dave … the best ones are pricey !

['though the cost is quickly amortised by those in some professions]

The good news is that the young Dentist who has recently joined our local practice is currently using a cheap set, off ebay.

… these ones, I think: **LINK**

                      [select 'loupes+light' from the drop-down]

He is, inevitably, planning to buy some better ones in due course; but considers them excellent value for money.
