just seen this book advertised on amazon- wondered if it was a new version of the old Worlshop Practice Series book, or the same as previously?

      **LINK**

Are there any new little tricks Ivan might have slipped in?

      Anyone know?

Comparing the preview pages on Amazon to my copy of Workshop Practice Book 17, the only differences I can see are in the page layouts, where the drawings have been moved around. Unfortunately the tables are not present in the previews, so I cannot see if there are any changes there.

The statement at the bottom of the front cover indicates that it has been 'Revised and updated by George Bullis, editor of The Home Shop Machinist magazine'.

… But whether that would justify another purchase, I know not.

I hope George has corrected the sin/cos error in the bevel gear formula

Thanks gents- since I have neither to start with I will probably pick up a WPS to match the set I’m steadily building… and I’ll hunt down this known cosine/sine error and annotate to suit!

Quite possibly "revised and updated" with modern USA terminology, spelling etc for the US market. i'v seen it done with several other British ME books.

Strangely enough, when I looked up the revised book on Amazon, one of the pages shown in the 'look inside the book' option was page 106! The formula given there is exactly the same handwritten one as in Ivan's book. So it looke as if George hasn't corrected that error.

Thanks Michael G & Mark … that clears it up ..

just in case you are wondering why the interest in bevel gears, I knocked up a simple drive mechanism for my 6" Newtonian binocular telescope which desperately needed some sort of Azimuth drive which didn't have to be accurate but would free up some manual control for adjusting collimation, focus and Altitude.

I used a clamp to fix the drive to the main vertical post of the ram which is required in order that the height of the eyepieces can be adjusted to suit the operator, however the Alt drive has to be disconnected when the ram is raised or the hydraulic ram would tear it to pieces .

Hence the picture of the clamp screw… I had little space to put the motor/gearbox so it had to be fitted vertically, which meant that the drive would need to be connected at 90deg to the motor drive and so a 90deg bevel gear was needed.

I purchased a small bevel gearbox which on arrival I thought might not be man enough, to my surprise it worked without failing, however the gearing could do with being reduced and made a little more robust, so I might have a go myself at making one.
