This is a 21" diameter final drive gear for a 6" scale Burrell traction Engine, with 124 teeth , 6DP,

Using a Vertex 14" rotary table, and a homemade division plate,

The casting includes the winch drum, and weighs approx 100 KG

Phil and John,

The TOS mill has power feeds and rapids,

I raised the table under power to cut the teeth,………………….Then used the "rapid" to lower the table to then set it for the next tooth, no arm ache at all !

The smaller gears for the 6" Burrell were cut on an Elliott U2 mill (no rapids), Power up and hand crank down, I calculated on a 95 tooth gear that I cranked the table down approx 2000 turns on the handle !!

Then I decided to use the TOS mill !

I just couldn't do it any other way, As you can see the casting overhangs the rotary table by 31/2" all round, clearance would have been a big problem , it only just fitted on the mill as it was, maximum table load is 250KG so including the rotary table I was just under that figure,

I'm not doing the bevel gears and pinions for the differential, I've had them professionally cut, They are a bit out of my league, all those calculations screw my head up!

Hi Richard,

Thanks for posting the pictures, very impressive. When I get round to machining the final drive gears for my engines I will be using a similar set up; good to know that it works. My rotary table isn't as fancy, in that it has no division plates, but fortunately my final drive gears have 72 teeth, so easy division. It seems slightly odd that the final drive gears on my 4" engine are 5DP, whereas yours are 6DP.

I don't have power drive on the knee of my horizontal mill, so I'd better start eating that spinach.

Your final drive gear has 72 teeth, mine has 124 teeth, so even though my gear is larger , mine are going to be smaller teeth, just how it was designed I suppose.

A balance wieght and pulley would make it easier on both machine and operator.

Bazyle,

You would need a big weight to counter balance the knee,table,rotary table and casting, would probably have to buy 3 or 4 large anvils !
