Can any one clarify for me the regulations regarding small boilers ie the gauge one project or Dee etc?

I have read conflicting imformation regarding pressure and bar litres.some saying 0.5 bar litres others saying 2 litres capacity. Are these boilers as i suspect not covered by the P E D?

Its not based on just the bar(0.5) or the capacity (2 litres) but a combination of the two. if when one is multiplied buy the other the result is less than 3 then they are exempt.

For example a 2 lts boiler running at 2bar would come within the rules as 2×2 = 4.

The same 2lts boiler if only run at 0.5bar would be exempt as 2×0.5 = 2

Some clubs may still want tests for boilers below the rule though.

Err is that not 1 ?

            2 x 0.5 = 1

It looks as if it will be all change from January 2013…….have a look at the G1MRA web forum site where the new regulations have been discussed over the last few days to the consternation and anger of many. Basically, miniature boilers, including those that fell into the 3Bar/litre category will all have to undergo the same test regime as larger boilers. Provided, that is, that you wish to run it in public and you want liability insurance. If, like me, you confine it to your own premises then it can be hydraulically and steam tested by yourself. The forum discussion is under the heading "Another piece of nonsense, now boiler testing".

Surely though this is just a change as far as most clubs are concerned to satisfy their public liability insurance and not a change to the law regarding the classification of boilers of ths size?

I take it from the replies already that the figure that matters is 3 bar litres. Anything below this and it is outside of the PED regulations and down to clubs and their insurance company.

I have not read the forum discussion yet as i am not a member of the G1MRA or any of the forum groups,so if i am talking complete and utter rubbish please forgive me.

Jason……as I have mentioned above, apparently there is to be no exemption and all boilers are to fall under the new regulations. From what I understand of it, the "good" news is that after an initial hydraulic and steam test any subsequent testing will only be steam tests

Jason….not wishing to labour this but if you require further information in relation to small boilers you can find it in para 14 of the Examination and Testing of Miniature Steam Boilers Boiler Test Code which is available to download from http://www.normodeng.org.uk/09 2012 Test Code V10 pdf (Sorry, I don,t know how to create a link).

This may be of interest to ME readers.David?

To answer Jason's original question: Boilers of less than 0.5 l. are not subject to the PED (Directive européenne 97/23/CE). Boilers of less than 2 l. must not be CE marked.

The "Regulations" issued by clubs and insurers are not compulsory however it is a good idea to comply with them as they represent good practice.

mick H Thankyou for the replies and the pointer to the new boiler test code.I knew it was being revised but had not seen the finished article till now. Also Russell's reply explains the 0.5 litre and 2 litre figures i have seen quoted in the past. The new code makes for interesting reading.I shall digest it further at my leisure.

Moderator. Is it worth refering to my comment in beginners forum about soft/silver solder for Australasian readers? I don't know the relationship between bars and lb/in2 sad
