      Hi

Just wondering which fuel most are using on their model engines?

I was running my Red Wing on super unleaded but after around 4hrs running I had to decoke the exhaust valve as it had a build up of soft carbon and started to leak, it was also sooting the plug up regularly. I initially put this down to the fact it wasn’t getting hot enough.

I have since tried Sthil fuel (think it’s the same as Aspen) and it will run for hours without any carbon build up. When I had a look after more than 10 hrs running there was just a light build up of carbon. So the Sthil fuel is the way to go but it’s over £5 a litre!

I use Colmans, still not cheap at about £7.50/lts but you don’t tend to use a smuch as if you were running your car on it. Also more economical to collect as postage is often high due to it being calssed as a hazard.

Hi Ian, not sure what Aspen fuel you are using, but the Aspen 2 alkylate fuel contains a 2 stroke oil.  Yes, it’s expensive, but the lack of benzine is good for you (apparently).

Good job you’re not using CI two stroke fuel, first you have to find it then sit down.

I have just ordered some Coleman fuel for my Redwing, in the hope that it will run.  It is now all painted and waiting for paint to harden before reassembly.

Benzine is not particularly harmful, it’s basically petroleum spirits like lighter fuel etc.

Benzene is both carcinogenic and poisonous with long term exposure, but is limited to 1% or less in petrol and gasoline. (Oddly, we still used it at school in chemistry lessons in the mid ’70s).

I’m using the 4 stroke version, there’s enough oil flying about from the oiler!
