There are a number of Model Engineers living in France on this site. I have started this thread so that we could get to know each other. If you read this thread and want to let others know which part of France you live in, or know of some good French suppliers of materials, clubs etc, just post a comment with your department and town postcode (not your full address).

Bonjour Bob, I am in Pyrenees Orientale, post code 66170.

There are no ME clubs near here. There is a national club for steam modelers, the CAV.

Suppliers are thin on the ground.

are good for small quantities of materials and Meadows and Passemore in Paris are good for clockmaking supplies.

Me again, this is an interesting ME forum, littered with adverts which aren't helpful, but worth a view for French ME's

I lived in France for 12 years after I retired – now back in the UK – and I've posted this link before on another thread but in case it's of interest to anyone, these people have a lot of goodies on their site. I've not bought from them, so can't pass comment on their quality of goods or services.

They have an online shop and downloadable catalogues to browse.

I do not live in France, but have dealt with this firm http://www.atelier-vaporiste.com/WWW2/av_home.php?lng=en Pascal is an honest man who gives a good service. Most of his business is garden railway related, but if you look under Atelier Vaporiste in his catalogue you will see he keeps a range of useful bits and pieces. He also has a laser cuter so can produce parts from drawings.

same for tooling….used tooling can be bought but it's almost the same price as new in the UK………

just found a steel yard north of Bordox that will sell without Siret Number…..

Main interests, antique cars and M/cycles…….anything old and mechanical…….

                        leaving soon for warmer climes……….

I'm in the north of France, nearer to Brussels than to Paris. Postcode 59400.

I'm a memebr of the club in Oignies: http://www.cmcf-oignies.com where there is a number of amateur metal-bashers.

For materials, we usually manage to find someone in the club who knows someone who can get offcuts, etc.

Otherwise, it's on-line to order things.

We're only a hundred or so km from Calais so we take a day trip to Alexandra Palace every year.

No, I think four is about it.

I was an ' ex-pat ' in Belgium for four years , traveled all over France and happened to walk pass the plaque

outside the house where Henry Royce lived, back in 1900's .

Guess he was one of 'us'.

I spend some time of the year in France, (or really Brittany which is a very separate part of France!) post code 22160, about an hour from Roscoff, but the rest of the time in Somerset. Model engineering there (France ) is model plane making; in the UK it's more metal bashing!

I live in Lorgues, a village in the Var, about 50 minutes North of St Tropez. When we first moved here some years ago, I could see little evidence of model making. Then I noticed an advertisement for a salon de modélisme in a local village. I went along, introduced myself and was invited to exhibit steam engines. The President and members of the club could not have been more welcoming. I joined the club and though still their only steam enthusiast have participated in numerous exhibitions in the area ‘http://www.les-tetes-en-lair.org/. ; some small and some in large centres such as Cannes and Toulon. There are no local, dedicated model engineering clubs, but there are some superb exponents of model engineering. I exhibited my model steam workshop and some Stirling engines at a small local exhibition at Regusse in September2018. At the show there were steam driven model boats and a delightful radio-controlled model steam car built from scratch. I am a member of the local steam enthusiasts’ group “Amicale Vaporiste Alpes Provence”. A small exhibition of models is planned for 23-26 May in my village and there will be another exhibition at Regusse in September. A well-known British artist specialising in railway scenes has a built a fabulous gauge 1 railway in his garden at Toulon and holds an open weekend each year at the end of May. Certainly, lots to do if you look for it. My advice is to join a model club and participate with what you do. Others will take interest and your circle can widen. French club members that I have met are incredibly hospitable, and the apero’s and meals guarantee a friendly atmosphere. Each year I go to the shows at Alexandra Palace and the Midlands, where I buy all the materials and bits that I need. I attach some photos from local exhibitions.

Hi, I owned a house just outside st-lo Normandy for 15 years, never did meet anyone who was interested in railways. The chap I purchased the house from made Rc boats, but he had to use them in the houses garden pond as there was nothing in the area. There is a good classic motorbike club, and arc aircraft club. Pity because they have lots of open land for a good club. However there are some great clubs in Germany, and I was always made very welcome when I took an engine.

I have been trying to join two French model/engineering forums without success for some time.

cav-escarbille moderators simply ignore my request to join despite follow-up emails to the 'general enquiry' email address asking them to please authorise my application.

forum-train.fr won't allow me to apply as it tells me that my email address is 'fake'. Of course the email I am using is correct, and I even set up a yahoo email to try and get my email accepted so that I can complete application. Still no success. Unable to contact moderators as it seems that one has to be a member to do so.

So, stymied on both fronts. Does anyone have any suggestions how to overcome these hindrances or perhaps knows of a French model (engineer) site that might be prepared to accept me?

My objective in joining is to seek clarification over some questions that I have about French Crampton locomotives.
