With the lousy weather we have had and more to come I have been concentrating on getting more into CAD in couch potato mode in front of the wood burner.
There are hundreds of tutorials many of which are rubbish presenters yet still get rave reviews for some reason.

I found this chap “Adventures in Creation” has a nice slow set of tutorials with none of the ‘manic mouse’ and slurred speech of so many. He carefully shows and explains slowly what button he is clicking fully aware of the common presentation deficiencies. There are a series of about 5 Basics then repeats some of it with a numbered Beginners series up into the #60s. There is a lot of repetition and a slow start to many so you can leap into an advanced one and not get totally lost but it is worth starting at No1 and later fast forwarding through the bits you know.

Then having got a bit more into it I am watching those by “MangoJelly” who is a bit faster so you do need to know the basics first.

Nice videos. There was a good introduction to FreeCAD on this forum by Dave (one of the moderators).

          Thanks for the link, Bazyle

… I’ve only watched the first few minutes but I like his presentation already.

Yes, I agree. Thanks Bazyle ! Sat through the first couple of lessons and appreciated the rather leisurely, but step by step approach. Seems tailored towards my lethargic brain these days 😉

I have been using Freecad for a while (on and off) and found Mango jelly very good but quite fast paced.

The one benefit is he is using the latest 0.21.2 version (also with support for the latest development version 0.22) whereas the guy in Adventures in Creation is using version 18.1

There is nothing wrong with this I suppose, except there are quite a few fundamental improvements, especially in the latest development 0.22 version.

It is certainly a very capable powerful software package that is completely free !!

Mango can be fast, which is why I was pleased to find a slower paced one.

Adventures has moved on in his recent videos, some focusing on the new features. The subjects can be a bit forced by the need to produce one every week.

I started with Mangojelly videos a few years back and, finding them too fast, I would run Freecad on my PC with my tablet at my side running the tutorials.  That way it was easy to stop the video and try it out live (and go back and repeat when I got it wrong!).

Thanks for the link to Adventures.  His videos look good as well.

FreeCAD has certainly jumped forward since I last looked at it, especially with the new features in v0.22 as demonstrated so precisely by MangoJelly, well worth checking out if you do any CAD, just use the link from Bazyle in the opening post.

Thanks to Bazyle for posting the link.

I wouldn’t even bother with old version videos.

It’s my pet hate – youtube videos which don’t make clear which version is being used.

Remember that you can always run youtube videos at half speed (or slower ).

Like a lot of stuff on interweb – there is a lot of garbage there….

It usually ends up with posts on FreeCAD forum, like this:

“… I am following YT video but my FreeCAD doesn’t work like this ….”

Please do bother with the two I linked initially if you are starting out. The beginners videos use very basic stuff that has not changed. Adventures makes a point of telling you which version he is using. The updates are just adding features not changing the user interface in the way some CAD programs have which is what probably has upset Chris above.

In my simple way I am feeling chuffed having drawn some Meccano bits last night full of holes correctly arrayed. (although they are available on Thingiverse)

                          Thanks Bazyle.

I’ve been on the verge of going full-on Yosemite Sam at the screen with some of those ‘beginner tutorial’ videos where I’m left scratching my head as to why I can’t access the same options the guy on screen can only to figure out half an hour of desperation later that there was a secretive mouse or key click or two somewhere that I was supposed to perceive by extra-sensory osmosis.

I’ve also been recommended these text based tutorials which might be nice for those of us (myself included) who need a bit more thinking time whilst following along.
