I'm delighted to announce that, thanks to the sterling efforts of forum member Nick Farr, I will be able to put each of the free plans published with MEW between 1990 and 1994 on this website.

The article HERE will also act as an index page.

Limitations on how we can handle big images means that each plan is presented as a pair of jpegs of the whole thing, but at fairly low resolution. These act as a guide for assembling the plan from overlapping scans in a series of printable pdfs.

The first plan is for a Rotary Table.

The real thanks must go to Nick, he's done a mammoth job.

Looking at a couple of back issues, I don't know if all of the plans had accompanying articles, but some certainly do. If anyone comes across any errors or errata printed in later issues, please post them here.

                      Free is always popular.

If you put the pdfs into a single file and view them "view / page layout / facing" you get a better perspective

I've just loaded the two big PDFs into GoodReader on the iPad.

They are legible at "fit screen" and I can "pinch-zoom" to see detail at pixel level.

Absolutely superb work, Nick … Couldn't ask for better

                        Thanks

I gather there was once a design published in MEW for a weir pump suitable for the runningboard of 5" loco's… any chance of this appearing??

Sorry Derek, that was ME, indeed I think several such 'running board' pumps have appeared in ME over the years in varying levels of detail. You can, of course, lobby Diane to see if she can republish one!

                                  Splendid work chaps!

Re the rotary table, this was in the very first issue of MEW, and although titled "Rotary Table" on the drawings was described by the author as "A Rotary Milling Device", and was a simple substitute for the conventional rotary table, not having the worm drive etc. The usual job of rounding off coupling rods is mentioned as a reason for it. It was intended to be mounted on a vertical slide on a Myford lathe.

The accompanying article covered 4 pages, but only about 2 pages worth were about building the table. The rest was taken up with pictures of locos and a traction engine. These days it would attract comment about unnecessary padding because of the pictures!

The link for the Swing Clear Rear Toolpost on the Free Plan Collection Page seems to be screwed up.

Unlike the link for the Rotary Table – which leads to another page listing the pdf's for the various pages – this one leads directly to the pdf for page-8 (only) of the plan.

In MEW No 216, Derek Spedding made a Toolmakers Hammer from the plan included in MEW No 8.

He ended his article " Maybe it is time to re-issue the drawings for this ………tool….."

As it should be coming up on this thread, has Derek got a crystal ball?
