I know I have at least one fan of these plans! It is rather unusual isn't it.

One using change wheels or a standard dividing had may have cyclical errors, but these should always even out to zero after a full rotation. This one produces even spacing except for any accumulated error in the final hole.

It must have worked well or MES wouldn't have offered to stock the kit of parts. I suspect it is sensitive to the quality of the build and care in use.

I have the hard-copy already; but these PDF plans are very easy to view on the iPad.

This device is interesting on a couple of counts:

• The chordal method is one of the earliest used by the "Instrument Makers" when setting out quadrants, etc. [have a look at Royal Observatory, Greenwich]
• The Brake mechanism is nicely done, and adaptable to other uses.

These days, a Stepper Motor is probably a better place to start … but we shoud not lose sight of the alternatives.
