Looks like the new forum knows what is up and what's down, this image displays the right way up on the new forum, it was taken with phone upside down ( button on left)
… but does it know horizontal from vertical or will we still have to stand sideways to view some images? (Not that I do).
It will put portrait as portrate and not stand you on your head.
Will not need to be put into a gallery, if still on your device then copy and paste or easier still drag from say file explorer to new forum.
If you don't have a copy you could go looking for it in a previous post, copy & paste the url into the new post. Or as I have said backup anything here in albums if you feel you may want easy access to it again.
For the small number you have Howard it is hardly worth bothering about and won't take long if you do need to copy any.
One "feature" of the current site which keeps annoying me which I don't recall having seen mentioned is the behaviour of "More Latest Posts". If this feature is retained it would be great if it actually showed a list that didn't include all the latest posts at the top – i.e. just the ones that dropped off the list.
That is one point me and Dave have been working on trying to get better than what the new one has at the moment
Would be really nice to have a "posts since last visit" or such like.
Rest assured that at least Me and Dave are doing our best to get the new site as good as possible, I don't think some staff are going to like the e-mail sent and comments I have made this morning
Will the new version have a count of how many times an image has been viewed? This is a good tool to an author to let he or she know they are on the right track with an idea.
Also I have been visiting this post for sometime with a view to find out when the likely change over will occur. Have you a date in mind? If you have already posted this and I have missed it my apologies.
Unfortunately I can't see any tracking of views of images, they way they will be added makes it even harder than it might be now as they won't be in an album (gallery) that is part of the website'
You have got me looking and I see that there does not even appear to be a number of views of a thread (topic) going to have to fill in another feedback form about that now (No41) as it is indeed nice to know on things like a build thread that you are not just writing to yourself when there are no comments.
On the good side on the new forum I would have been able to post a link to take you to the exact post where I gave the current state of play. Here it is again
"Aim is about a months time but don't hold your breath it was originally going to be April (not the 1st) when this thread was started"
Those of us with access to unix/linux and, possibly Macintosh systems can probably use wget or curl to scrape up our albums
A cheeky way to make sure they were all available in the new software might be to create a dummy post with the entire contents of one's albums, if one had time and the current software allowed that.
Finally, does the current software store the albums in one or more database tables? If so it should be possible to extract the data with properly crafted queries once the database schema has been understood.
DC31K has already posted how to suck that Egg earlier in the thread, SOD, fellow Linux man) has improved on it but keeping quiet at the moment a he is busy trying to break the new forum though It may be broken to start with.

To be technical, I haven't improved DC31K's program. All I've done is correct the source code that was mangled by the forum in his earlier post. That's all I've done – his program works and I see no reason why it wouldn't run on Windows or Apple. It requires Python and a couple of modules.
As a lot of members downloading in bulk at the same time could crash the server, I've asked Morton's to confirm they're happy with it being run. Net etiquette and all that…
If you are road testing the new forum, could you have a look to see if it has something like a

tag that we could put around things we wish to be displayed as effectively unformatted, monospaced text.
It would help with computer code of any language and maybe if someone wants to post G-code. It would also help if someone wants to post tabulated information.

Yes it does, if you know how. Here's a test screenshot of a post on the new forum, you might recognise the code example:
It's done by switching the editor into Text mode, which allows HTML to be inserted. <code> is supposed to change a single line to a monospace font, and it doesn't. However text pasted between <pre> and </pre> tags does the needful. (pre is short for pre-formatted, which in HTML means "leave this alone".
Other parts of this test post were less happy. An advanced version of the editor was enabled, which does headings, colour, special characters and other gizmos. They all work in edit mode, but not in the post. <h2> is meant to switch to Heading2 format, but the post part of the forum doesn't understand formats. So we're back to the basic editor, at least until the developer gets back Monday week.
A related feature request is for the new forum to host PDF and other documents: this is under discussion.
Knowing these should make it easier to log in to the new forum. Events last night and still ongoing this morning show that is can get complicated if you don't now these things and it is currently harder for the Mods to look up details that they need. I won't say which Moderator could not log in as I don't want to embarrass her.
Related to that as soon as you change anything in your profile you are likely going to be told your password is too weak and need to change it. I will ask to see if this can be altered
Jason, just to be clear, will the url remain the same please? For those of us that use password managers, then if it does this will remember the credentials for us.
As it will muck up all the thread where you have inserted an album image. The system will carry them over into the threads and posts if they are left there . It is just that they will no longer be in an album as the images are handled differently on the new system
New URL (certainly at the moment) so passwords remembered for this site may not automatically be inserted when you first try to log in. That is why it is important to check what you are using.
There is a "lost your password" that can be clicked but would be easier to use your existing rather than be thrown straight into having to change it.
BTW at the moment we are getting a lot of log in failures on the first attempt and often needs 2 or 3 tries. Hopefully the backroom boffins will get this sorted before going live
