The thread “Rulers – my pet peeve” prompted me to write this.
Two things niggle me on these forums.
The first is people that ask for help but will not answer questions asked by other members trying to help them. For example someone asked about getting a poor finish on his lathe. He could be forgiven for not giving more detail with the question as he probably did not know the factors influencing the finish. But he did not answer all of the questions asked regarding material cutting speed and tool type etc..

The second is people that ask for advice then never make another post on the thread. You do not know if they have even bothered to read the replies. I would prefer them to say that none of the replies were helpful than say nothing.

      Les.

I know what you mean tho’ – it can be very irritating, especially if you have gone to some trouble to make a reply. It’s not just here tho’ – it’s right across the spectrum of fora from what I can see.

What is even more irritating are the replies that always start with:

              I’ve not done this but….
or : are you sure its not?…..

as though the person asking the question is a complete buffon with absolutely NO knowledge or intellegence and then goes on at great length as to how they did something not remotely related to the original question.
There seem to be far too many people here with far too much time to waste on the internet and very little engineering/model making experience.
There are of course some exeptions. – it will indeed be VERY interesting to see who replies to this!

                Hi Neil,
You make a good point as it is not a question. I could not find a category that the remark fitted into.

                Hi Tel,
It is my first niggle that I find most annoying as without information it is often not possible to identify the problem. I agree that it also occurs on other furums.

I’m not sure how to categorise this post but I prefer people to give the thread a title that relates to the content so that it is clear what the subject is and lets later searches find it. Unlike other forums David is very good and has twice renamed a thread at my request.
Some forums on other subjects are full of threads titled “help”, “Urgent help…” Lost” “broken down” etc. I don’t read everything and like to be able to preselect the topic.
Some people do seem to rush on with a post before doing any research but there again I have occasionally replied without giving it enough thought and get proved wrong by the next contributor.

My niggle – which seems to happen a lot lately – concerns people who join a thread when it’s in full swing, apparently scan a few messages and then seem to infer from that what the whole thing’s about and proceed to post without ever having read the original post.

They either answer the wrong question entirely or they make suggestions or pose questions which were fully dealt with by the originator.

Yes a misleading thread title is very annoying as i usually scan over these for something of interest also .
Another thing is when you start reading a thread that interest you someone will drag it off in another direction and you end up with pages of stuff that has no relevance to the title, although there have been times when the string has wandered off subject and ended up being better for it !

I do not call my steel distance scales anything other than a ‘Stick of Inches’. In Hungary I call them ‘Hosszbol mili’ and pull out my ‘Stick of Inches’ to check what they are trying to palm me off with.
Other things are called ‘straight edges’.

I usually read new threads, if not of interest then do not bother for a while, then some weeks later discover the thread has gone of course and is full of interesting stuff ! Although I’ve never met anyone on the forum I like to think that I know them, would probably be surprised if I did meet them. I have noticed that when I reply to a thread it is usually the last entry.

Does that give you the feeling that people are ignoring you?!!
We can’t have that so here you are – MY post – nothing to do with the thread but at least YOU are not now the last entry. Hope that makes you feel better !

When you created your reply, did you perhaps use the ‘return’ key to create new lines? because there is no need to, the text normally flows by itself once a line is full.

                                                Hi Nigel,
I too find this a nuisance and have wondered how people put the link is a new window. I have just had a look to see how to do it but at first did not see how. It was only when I selected the drop down menu for “Target” to see what “Target” mean that I found the option for a new window. Thanks for making the point which prompted me to find out how to do it.
