Good Morning David, The reason as to why I am looking for a Fortis lathe, believe it or not I worked in the factory in Cornwall that sold , built , reconditioned the lathe many years ago , it was also used in their own production work shop as the company were also approved by the MOD & Admiralty to manufacure fighting vehicle spares etc, some of the lathes were sold with the square tool post & some had the single American tool post, they were supplied with logitudinal feed as well as cross slide feed to sum up this is an old man going back to his roots

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Might I suggest that you place a "wanted" advert here and on homeworkshop.org.uk

It may get you some results a little quicker that hoping by chance that one may turn up on your doorstep.

                regards

                  lester eddy:

Might you provide some Fortis memories to Tony Griffiths to supplement the existing lathes.co.uk entry?

                  Good luck with your search!

On here, gumtree, epay, lathesdotcodotuk, homeworkshopmachinetools (dealer) are all alternative sites for searching. As well as machinery dealers, of course.

If there is not one for sale in the classifieds (rhs and down a bit on this page) it would be far better to place a wanted ad in the ‘wanted’ section than clutter up the archives with soon to be out-of-date postings/threads

Hi Jarvis Watts, welcome to the forum, however I don't know much about Fortis lathes, but I did go to Camborne in 1975 to attend a four day pneumatics course run by Compair Maxam, who had their factory there, but the course was in a conference room in some centre or other, up near Cornwall College Camborne. Spent five nights in Tyacks hotel which looks a bit different now from Google's street view.

                        Regards Nick.

Compair Maxam, did they take over Holman Brothers, who supplied much of the compressed air equipment used in Cornish Tin / Copper mines?

Think that we were supplying engines to them in the mid 70s.

Hi Howard and Nick, Maxam was owned by Holman just a different part of the business.. theres a fair bit of information on wiki here **LINK**

my dad served his time at Holmans as a pattern maker from 65 until 85 when he jumped ship and took redundancy to start up doing patterns and castings on his own. One of my brothers also served his time there in the 90s as a machinist.

Would any body be able to find me a contact number for Lester who is interested in the fortis lathe please? There is a wanted advert he posted but I cannot view any contact details on there.

                              Cheers Jarvis

Hi Jarvis, interesting link, thanks for that. While I can remember names like Maxam, Compair and Broom Wade, I can't recall the Holman name, but it was 1970 before I worked for a company that used a lot pneumatics on there production plants, but it was a new semi-automatic plant with fairly complex Compair Maxam pneumatics, that the company asked me to go on the course down in Camborne.

By the way, Jarvis and Lester, it's best not to put personal info like telephone numbers or email addresses in your posts, use the PM system (personal message) for making contacts.

                                  Regards Nick.
