      Hi There
Does anyone know where I can get a flycutter with a 2 Morse taper shank with an M10 thread for the drawbar?
All the ones I have come across have a 3/8 Whitworth thread.
Also, where can I get a length of 3/8 Whitworth studding?

      regards David

            Hi David,

have you thought of the straight shank flycutters available which can be used in a chuck either on the milling machine or lathe. They are quite successful and I bought my set at RDG. The 75mm square block below was a test using the cutter in the picture. table was hand fed  and the surface was even better than it looks here. This was the day before my workshop burnt down.

            Regards

EKP have 3/8 BSW studding in 12″ lengths on their website. They also do metric and BA studding.

                Hi David,
Arrand do a range of flycutters with interchangeable shanks with a choice of drawbar threads.

Not dfficult to screwcut the required thread on the end of a plain drawbar.

                    Hi David,
I too have searched for an M2 flycutter with an M10 thread. They seem to be very rare!
I ended up making a flycutter as shown here:
I guess you were thinking of the 3/8″ BSW studding in order to make a drawbar. It would be very quick to single point thread both ends of a piece of 3/8″ round in order to make a drawbar.

                      Hi Mike
                      Yes, studding for a drawbar.
MyTom Senior has a metric Drawbar and the studding would enable me to use a flycutter in it.
I used the flycutter once but no drawbar, just a tap to fit it to the taper but I only did that once in an emergency. Don’t want to do it on an ongoing basis.
However, I am fairly sure my KXi CNC mill is a 10mm thread and I don’t really want to change the captive drawbar as the ER holders are 10mmhence the need for a 10mm threaded flycutter. At least, the ER holders fit the Tom Senior 10mm drawbar.
I do like the look of the smaller head flycutter available I think from Chronos.
                      Could be very useful.
                      regards David

                        Hi Terry
I am not keen on the parallel shank flycutters.I have heard they cause fires.
Only joking but I like the balanced head ones.
Actually, that is not a bad idea.
I am thinking along the lines of the Tormach quick change system based on a 3 Morse collet and parallel shank tool holders.
I am basing mine on a 2 Morse collet and 12 mm shanks.
A 12mm parallel shank might not be a bad idea.
                        regards David

Had a look at Arrand and while I expect they are the highest quality £41 seems a bit expensive.

                              Hi David,
The set I bought from Chronos worked very well and the quality wasn’t bad but then again don’t use them too often. the size is adequate and I like HSS tooling for steel and non ferrous so they are pretty well perfect for me. But I suppose which you buy depends on the normal factors.
I just used them in a straight shank milling cutter holder as I think they have a Weldon flat but I’m not sure, it’s been a while now, but they even worked well in a 3 jaw Jacobs chuck as there is no helix there is no force to pull the cutter out. (By the way, the clinching factor was the price, not an expensive mistake if you don’t get on with them and easy to sell on eBay).
                              Regards

This site is fine until I put my postcode in.
Price jumps from £5.50 to £20 + cost of goods.
Have they not heard of Royal Mail for small orders?
                                regards David

You could try South Essex Fasteners (01702 615326).
I’ve been using them for years and their prices are astonishingly good.
I recently bought two 1 metre lengths of 3/8″ whit studding, a fistful of nuts and washers and the whole lot came to about £5.
I used the studding for a drawbar on my new 2MT Posilock chuck.

I don’t know what their post charges are but it’s still worth checking them out.

David, my large flycutter screws onto the thread on the spindle nose, no drawbar, home made. The draw bar for my collet chuck was made by cutting the heads off two bolts, and welding them together,on the top end a nut is threaded on, then another nut welded on the end. Ian S C

                                        Hello David.
Some time ago I bought from one of the two: Chronos or RGDTools, a set of three flycutters which has a set of four detachable shanks. Two of them were MT2 and MT3. The other two are cylindrical.
The MT2 shank had a 3/8″ thread and the drawbar in my milling is 10mm.
I had the flycutter in my hands and my only solution was to use a 10mm HSS tap and redo the thread in the MT2 shank.
Couldn’t analyze the resulting threads in the detail. But given the length of the section of the drawbar entering the shank I thought the resulting threads would be enough to support the efort.
I had to do the same operation in other tools I bought with threads 3/8″ and I find it is a “good enough” solution.

                                        Notes:
Depending on the hardness of the MT, You may have to use a very good set of taps. After some trying I used a set made by a Spanish company named IZAR. I was most satisfied with their taps. After that I mostly buy cutting tools made by them and distributed here in Portugal.

Yes, i found oily gunk within. So if You go this way You should take care.

My only connection with IZAR is as a satisfied customer.

I had the same problem (e.g. my Flycutter had a 3/8 thread)- and I simply made an adaptor (3/8″ > M10). It lives permanently on the end of the morse taper and Iuse the one M10 drawbar for everything.

                                                  Hi Mike
                                                  Very interesting site.
I have madea couple of flycutters before but both times I offset the cutter the wrong way and ended up running them in reverse.
                                                  Third time lucky?
                                                  regards david

permenant solution helicoil i used this on 3mt when the new chinaman made all the old tooling obsolete a cheapy kit from tracy tools had sufficient inserts for everything and some left over not a great deal dearer than the studding.
