      Good morning,

I was pottering around the garden yesterday, and came across half a dozen or so small stone like things around 3/4″ dia. x 1/2″ thick.  Has anyone any idea what they might be?  I suspect, after the weekends shenanigans, they’re firework debris.

They resembled aerated concrete (pale grey colour and texture).  Heavier than “Celcon”, but lighter than brick.  If they’d come down on a car, or more importantly someone’s head, the result wouldn’t be pleasant.

I did wonder if they might be unburnt fireworks, just as I’m thinking about mowing the lawn.

Not seen anything like that myself from fireworks,  usually plastic debris and sky rocket bodies etc.

But they could be some kind if wadding material for fireworks.

The perennial deluge of complaints about fireworks has come again. Personally I don’t mind bonfire night, although the bonfires of my childhood have been replaced by purely fireworks parties.

But the clue is in the name, bonfire night, not bonfire week, or month or season. We had fireworks on Halloween, all the way to Nov 5th and it will be on and off now until new year.

There was a piece in the news about a fireworks dealer saying he needs to make a living year round so he’s all for baby showers, weddings and gender reveals being celebrated with explosives.

I’m pretty sure that if some terrorist used his head and realised that we sell actual explosives on the high street he would not bother messing with chapati flour and hair bleach to create a big bang. Just buy boxes of fireworks and use the gunpowder to make the big bang he desires. If that happens you can bet fireworks will get banned in moments.

As an aside, does anyone actually consider the emissions of all the explosives we let off worldwide?  I mean, we look at air travel, fossil fuels, burning rain forests, even cows trumping…but ton upon ton of military grade munitions go unmentioned. I know they kill people immediately,  but if I have to use a non polluting, eco friendly, recyclable, zero carbon toilet roll, then surely the military should be made to go back to basics and reissue the sword and bow and arrow.

Bear in mind that Diwali falls around the same time as bonfire night, and is celebrated with fireworks. But it’s based on the lunar calendar – like Easter – so doesn’t fall on a specific date.

Of course, in the Telegraph to-day.

It’s correct that Diwali also celebrates with fireworks, as I mentioned you can buy fireworks year round these days and let them off anytime you like subject to the restrictions which are relaxed on  Nov 5th and new years eve.

But do we really need to? Honestly?

With the drone displays and laser shows we can do better than things that go bang!

Injuries to people and animals, damage to property, deliberate use as weapons. We could say goodbye to all that if only we had the will.

Oh and a government system that actually listened to its electors and did what they were asked rather than what was in their best interests. See the ex labour mp who quit because the party are only interested in retaining the power of the ruling class.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. I like things that go BOOOOM!

Replacing real fireworks with lasers and drones is like replacing oil paintings with photoshopped images on a TV.

As I said nick, subject to those provisions.

Fireworks are set off well after 11pm year round, for all kinds of reasons. The law is OK as long as people abide by it, fact is they don’t.  Little Rapunzles first birthday in March is such an important occasion we simply must have a midnight Fireworks display.

It’s OK making laws, but lack of enforcement means it’s just a paper exercise.

Well, the statistics don’t support the idea that fireworks are a problem.  In the 12 years from 2012, 116 people required hospital treatment and there were 7 fatalities.  In 9 of those years there were zero fatalities.

If it’s important to ban things that cause injury, number one on the UK list is motoring!  In 2022:

                                • 1,711 fatalities
                                • 28,031 severe injuries
                                • 105,758 minor injuries
                                • These numbers exclude deaths and injuries due to pollution.

In comparison with cars fireworks are mostly harmless.  My cat hates them though!
