Can anyone suggest/recommend a filler to fill small gaps between steel and wood and can be painted over

I guess it depends on the gap and whether expansion/contraction will cause cracking, and what sort of paint will be used; is this for a model, or building job?.
When I was still gainfully employed, I used quite a bit of intumescent mastic for firestopping cable holes through walls etc.
It sticks to almost anything, but, so long as it’s not set, it can be cleaned off or smoothed to a fine finish with plain water; don’t bother trying to sand it.
When set , it remains slightly flexible.
Brilliant stuff for decorating too, if a touch on the expensive side 10 years ago, but checking just now, the price seems to have dropped dramatically.
