The article in the MEW reminded me that I keep thinking about a better way of storing my collection of files. Presently:
large (heavy) files are laid horizontally in a sort of shallow drawer recess that was not intended to have a drawer, but could have. Due to gravity often being stronger than the static friction holding the tang in the handle.

Most are hung on panel pins, easy to see what I am grabbing, but take up a lot of wall space.

Warding, needle and rifler files are either in the plastic wallet they came in or in one of 2 plastic boxes.
      How do others store theirs?
The solution in MEW seems to hide the files from view making selection more difficult.

I am afraid that I am a bit slap-dash when it comes to file storage. There must be over 50 of various sizes and types just laid in a metal tray under my bench top at the vice end. Easy to grab when the need arises and, whilst ‘Inspector Meticulous’ may say that this is detrimental to their life span, I am hardly constantly scraping them together. Some of them must be getting on for 45 years old and still seem to be cutting satisfactorily so just placing them in the tray and selecting one as and when required hasn’t done much harm and anyway I do not have enough wall space to hang each one in a tool-clip.

I made this to store the essential ones. Fine , medium and coarse cut, top to bottom. Different profiles, left to right.

Very similar to my file storage, except mine are attached to the underside of a shelf above the bench, utilising otherwise wasted space:

            File storage

6mm ply and spacing offcuts of softwood for the 10″ & 6″, PVC cable conduit for the 4″ files, hot snotted together.  Must improve the hieroglyphics on the edge of the shelf showing the file shapes…

I keep the most used on the wall behind the vice, easy to see what is what

On wooden handles I felt tip the shape on the end. Some home made handles are sufficiently distinctive to to stand out but after a few days of non use I forget which profile is on which handle.
Storage is upright in a cardboard box with dividers that was a quick temporary solution a decade ago.

Thanks for all of the replies.
My idea from some time ago was similar to how I store my wood chisels etc. A slim cupboard that effectively triples the wall storage space i.e. hung on the wall, the inside of the door and the outside of the door. File handles drilled and hung on panel pins or the odd plastic one already has a suitable hole.
However, when I was looking at them today I realised that I had been generous with the space between them. So I repositioned several of the pins and managed to empty one of my plastic boxes of smaller files, just leaving the needle and rifler files, and the largest ones laid flat.

I made a couple of Guy luatard ( Is that the right spelling?) rotating ones about ten years ago and a worthwhile job too. One is two tiered with Swiss files on the top storey.
