      Hello

I am looking for back issues of Model Engineer from 2002.  Volume 189 number 4184 and 4186, namely the Ferris Wheel Clock.

      Can anyone help.

        Martin,

Unless you like polishing? I suggest you use some clear lacquer, I have found the paint on variety the best. Hang the item on a piece of fine wire while you coat it, this will also help with drying. Note that you should not coat any parts that come into contact with other parts, ie teeth, pinions or pivots. Also, only give it a fine coat, allow the first coat to dry before you apply another, if needed.

        Regards

Perhaps I’m simply blind, but I can’t find the Ferris wheel articles and DXF files anywhere anymore – I had downloaded them (the articles at least) once already but have had what could be called a filing failure and have likely deleted them…

Would greatly appreciate a link or pointer to what I’m doing wrong, or where I should be looking… !

Also, did the magnetic clock design ever get posted?

          Thanks,

          Youra.

Good afternoon. Whether who can or help? The passed pages from the
description “ferris wheel clock” are very necessary for me. I will be
very grateful, if someone responds. My e-mail: garimas@bk.ru

There is a recipe for this problem it comes from (probably illegal) book called 1001 household recipes.
The way is to get white shellac and dissolve it in ‘clear spirit’ (methylated tends to darken it). Spray it onto the plates which have been pre warmed to about 70-80° C. This gives a even coat and stops ‘slides’ of the varnish. The result will be golden coloured plates and cogs.

                Electronic Control Board

I'm having problems comming to grips with the electronics, as I feel some of the hole numbering are conflicting.

                16 pin socket – 31:14, 31:7 & 27:7, 27:7 should this read 32:14. 32:7 & 27:14, 27:7?

                Resistor 10K – 17:6, 17:10 – 17:10 is also the same as a link at 17:10?

                Capacitor 0.01 – 16:6, 16:8 is also the same as a link at 16:8?

To cut track at 8:11 is also the same as link 8:11 does one cut the track at each side of the hole?

I would appreciate if anyone can advise me how I should proceed???

                Regards

                    Martin,

there are actually a number of things that don't add up on that page of the build instructions – some of the component values don't match – for example the parts list doesn't call up a 1k resistor, but it's in the build instructions (substituted for a 10k), etc…..

If I have some time over the next week, I'll draw something up properly, and try to resolve that and a couple of other little niggles I've noticed. Mind, I haven't actually got as far as building this yet, so especially when it comes to the time constants, I might get it wrong as they likely have mechanical dependencies….

                    Youra.

                        Hi There
Dick Stephen says all his articles can go on the web.
He has just posted me a CD with DXF files for his clocks.
The magnetic clock had a new hall effect switch fitted.
That article can go up as well.
                        regards David

                        David,

Unless we are simply looking in the wrong place …. With the exception of one article [linked in my previous post], these files seem to be unavailable.

Youra has informed me that he has the full set, downloaded when they were accessible. Understandably, however, he does not feel able to share these, because of the Copyright Notice.

If Youra sends the files back to you; could you please post links within this thread, so that we can all access them?

                        Many thanks

                        MichaelG.

                          Hi There

Links to the ferris wheel clock are in model making at the top tab.

None of the PDFs were removed, just the links.

You can find all the original PDFs for all the articles that were uploaded by searching on the home page as long as you know what you are looking for.

Try searching for PDF in the search box.

                          Allsorts may come up.

Can someone check all the links, Internet Explorer 9 locks up on most pdfs and I can't download them to check them.

                          regards David

                            David,

I've just downloaded all the files, and they are just fine (I used Firefox not IE…)

The magnetic clock articles are also there – many thanks!

I've tried using PDF (and .pdf) as a search term, and the only results I get are:

                            >>

                            <<

A search on 'Ferris' does however pull up a link to the page with the PDFs.

Did the Ferris clock DXFs ever make it into the wild, as it were….?

                            Thanks again,

                            Youra.

                                        Hi Folks

I'm thinking of making this fascination timepiece, the mechanicals are within my experience but those electronics frighten me!

Can anyone please tell me where can I buy all the bits and bobs necessary?

Is it difficult to make this circuit board? How the heck does one test and troubleshoot it?

Any tips or clues would be gratefully received.

Though the drawings are in the articles so not a great hardship to draw out any that you may want a DXF for, this took less than 5mins.

Yes, I plan to create a model in Alibre CAD from the magazine drawings. Was hoping for the author's original DXF files to check my work, but no worries. Thank you!
