Part 6 seems to start in mid-air. Could we have the missing page, please.
Incidentally, this web site is the best magazine that I”ve come across. Keep going!

I have added the required page……. I missed it when compiling the PDFs, so my humble apologies

This is my first clock project and it has been running now for a few months. I realise Richard Stephen said it was not a beginners project but I was intrigued by it’s complexity – I like a challange so if I can do it so can any other competent modeller.
I have one small problem which I hope someone can help with, ocasionaly (about once a week) the ball recyling system stops before completing it’s cycle so a ball space is missed, the clock still continues to run but this is clearly not a satisfactory situation.
              Can anyone suggest a fix?

Can anyone advise me where I can obtain the dxf files for making some of the parts on a CNC machine?
This is mentioned on page number 178 – 5th April 2002.

                  Hi all.

I also have a question – in the December instalment Richard Stephen says he’s changed the design to reduce noise. Does anyone know what the changes consist of ?

I’ve tried sending a message to the email address given for him, but I get a permanent delivery failure….

                  Thanks,

                    Youra,
I have also sent an email to the address in the article and was unable to get a response.
I have drawn the escape wheel in AutoCad and machined one in plastic as a trial. At the weekend I will make one from Ti which I had sent to Australia from USA.
It will save so much time if I could get the dxf files already done.
I was hoping that someone would read this forum who could put me in touch with Richard Stephen, or anyone who is willing to send me the files, I do not expect these as a gift, I’m prepaired to pay for them.

                    Regards

                      Hi All,
I got copies of the files for Richard’s Magnetic clock via the ME editor.
                      David
Have you got Richard’s current email address?

                        Hi Col, Martin

I was planning to draw up at least the plates and the Ferris wheel and support arms, then borrow some time on the model shop machines at work for those bits – I’d class them as the less “interesting” parts to make..

Will happily share the files once I’ve completed them, but it’s not a priority at the moment (house move pending with bigger workshop space ) so it won’t be terribly soon…..

Col – where were the plans for the Magnetic Clock published originally – it’s not one I’ve come across….

                        Cheers,

I dont have Richards email address, but maybe it would be polite to first send a request to David at ME. Or if I gave you my email address could you send me the address, it is not good to give out contact detail over a public forum?
Anyone know where I can buy the brass sheet for the Ferris Wheel Clock?

                              Hi There
I have emailed Dick asking for DXFs for the Ferris wheel and magnetic clock and also the circuit diagram and pemission to post on the website.

                              Try Folkstone Engineering for brass.
                              I think they do it.

The DXFs on the website would be great – thanks !  Any chance of also running the magnetic clock articles ?

For pre-cut brass for wheels and so-on, I’ve in the past used:

I think not as cheap for large sheets, but pre-cut discs for wheels come out competitively  – excellent range of clockmaking books too.

                                … just a happy customer – no other axe to grind… !

                                  Hi There
We are currently pdfing another 2 years of ME and MEW.
We don’t know how far we can go back digitally but I expect
it will cover the magnetic clock articles.
The downside is that it will be a subscription based service.
You will have to subscribe to the digital back issues to get access.
This will be on top of any magazine subscription although the service
will probably be open to non sunscribers.

We intend to keep the last two years free for subscribers and as new issues are put onto the website, the oldest issue will be transferred to the digital back issues subscription.
Final details to be worked out.

I will press for old issues of MEW to be made available on CD.

                                  regards David

                                    Hi David,

I had thought you already had 1947 – 1981 of ME available to you in PDF format already, possibly more by now, or had I not understood correctly ?

Of course keeping recent copies for print subscribers only makes perfect sense – why else would anyone buy a subscription, after all.

                                    Cheers,

We have a large amount of magazines in PDF format but they don’t include the adverts.
We have to put the entire magazine on as it was printed inluding all adverts etc.
That is why we are selecting various articles that are our copyright.

                                        Have heard from Dick.
He will supply files but it will take a bit of time as his eyes are getting bad.
I also asked aout the noise correction.

Dick is doing a new clock and hopes to write it up in Model Engineer.

I have just finished machining the escapement wheel on a Chinese CNC mill.
Material is Ti, 1mm dia endmill, 0.2mm cutting depth @ 30mm/min feed rate and lots of WD40 as a coolant media.
I have posted some photo’s in ‘Martin Album’ if these all don’t appear in the post

Did you do your own drawings to generate the CNC code or did you get Dick’s files?

Is the finish of the mill good enough or do you need to hand finish?  Are you going to leave the corners round or square them up in the traditional manner?

                                              Hi Col,
Yes, I did the drawing in AutoCad, saved it as a dxf file then converted it to a tap file in BobCad, I run the G codes in Mach3 operating system for the CNC mill, then crossed my fingers and toes,
I took very fine cuts to maintain a good surface finish, but I may cut another one with a higher spindle RPM (3200). I even thought about fixing a higher rpm spindle on the side of the miil to see how much better I can get it, I’m a little concerned about the rise in temparature when machining Ti. at high speed
In regards to the radius corners, if I leave the dimensions as they are I may square them off, however I was considering making the whole thing thinner, if so, I will leave the corners to maintain some strength. Once the drawing is done it is quite simple to change bits as required.
I don’t mind offering the file to anyone who would like it. hower I’m a self tort CNC hobbyist, so the file may not be the best, but it has done the job, also all care but no responsibility!!!

                                                Hi There
Dick Stephen says all his articles can go on the web.
He has just posted me a CD with DXF files for his clocks.
The magnetic clock had a new hall effect switch fitted.
That article can go up as well.
                                                regards David

I have just updated the Ferris Wheel Clock article to include the DXF files compressed into zip format.

This should enable those of you with CNC equipment to make the required parts ” in house”.

I also have a limited number of PCB for the revised circuit for the magnetic drive clock. The cost is £2.00 excluding P&P.
I have copleted a wall clock movement with a grasshopper escapement If there is sufficient interest I wiil try to write this up eyesight pemitting.

                                                      Maintaining sheen.

Can anyone advise what is the best method of maintaining the high polished sheen which we all work so hard in achieving, only to find some months/days later oxidisation has taken this away and replaced it with a dull yellow tone?
I live in Perth Aust. which is blessed with a warm dry climate, but others in the cooler northern hemisphere contries must be faced with this problem on a somewhat larger scale.
