      As I said, the "rough edge" meaning is old. OED gives various examples of its use accessed free, in my case, via my membership of the local library – worth a look if you can do the same or have your own subscription.

        My OED is the cd-rom version which I received as a gift many moons ago (most of the files are dated 2009). Handy to have with a shortcut on my desktop.

        Not sure if they still do the cd-rom version. There is a website which purports to sell it but the ordering links go nowhere so it may be the remnants of an old site.

          Me too. I spent nearly 40 years in various contacts with engineering personnel from Cornwall to Dundee and never heard the word in any other context.
