Face mill cutting angle

I have a SNMX 50mm 45deg face mill that uses RM8 inserts. This was recommended by Cutwel and very successful it is. I was looking for a smaller version of this, 32 or 40mm, and I was pointed at some 90 deg face mills. These undoubtedly work but I don't know what the practical difference between them is, can some enlighten me please?

The holder that uses inserts at 45 degrees can only machine surfaces that are open on all sides. The holder that uses inserts at 90 degrees can, in theory, machine a surface that has a shoulder on one, or more sides.

You can get 40mm shell mills that use four APMT or APHT 11or16 size inserts, they will require an arbor in your spindle fitting. They can cut to a 90 degree shoulder, but you have to allow for the radius in the corner. Your 45 degree face mill is very good for flat surfaces and is easier cutting because of the angled edges.

Thanks chaps, it's sort of obvious now you have pointed it out. I can proceed with an understanding of what I'm doing, always a help.
