I became the almost accidental custodian of a Maxitrak Planet a while back; I bought it broken with my Britannia Boiler savings intending to repair it, let my boys use it at the track and then sell it (hopefully at a profit) fully working to boost the Britannia Coffers. What actually happened was I bought it, repaired it, cosmetically tidied it up, and am now rather too fond of it to move it on.

Obviously its a rather broad interpretation of the Planet, but while researching the Prototype to get some inspiration I found a couple of things were interesting.

      1) On more than one there is a red lamp on the forward face of the cab, presumably as a warning or similar. As its on one face only it doesn't appear to be a beacon, and it doesn't seem to have a matching red lamp on the other side suggesting its more than just a tail lamp. Does anyone have any idea what it might be? I've seen it on more than one locomotive.

      2) For the life of me I can't find any photos of the cab and their controls. It's more out of interest than anything, I won't be modelling anything along these lines, but I would like to see a photo of the details. Does anyone have any photos of the controls or know where I could see some?

      Thanks, Jon.

The Guinness brewery tramway in Dublin used F.C. Hibberd Planet locos, but only of 1ft 10" gauge.

This is a picture of the inside of the cab of the one in the Guinness Museum, if it is any help.

I've since discovered that the red light is in fact a tail lamp; what I thought was a photograph of the same locomotive was in fact two different ones. It would appear they often have the red and white lamps on the cab tops, just in case this is of interest to anyone else google searching for Hibberd Planet locomotives in the future.
