The comments about light are good. bright light=small pupil the smaller the pupil the greater your depth of field (think pinhole camera with huge depth of field and no lens – but needs lots of light!)

So start by making sure you have plenty of light – I have three 4' fluorescent tubes plus an anglepoise and a halogen desk lamp I point at what I'm working on.

I see no one has mentioned laser correction. I wore glasses from 14, now 67. Short sight.

A couple of years ago I had 1 eye done. I can only say what a fantastic investment. So 1 eye is short sight still and the other is now normal vision. I can now see a bus number at 2.5 ish city blocks away. And sight only gets a bit blurred when, say, looking at mm divisions on a rule. 10 seconds work, a couple of days slight discomfort. No glasses under the welding shield. No smearing in rain. Pop crash helmet on.

Well worth investigation. In fact, I would go so far as to say if it had been available when I was young, it would possibly have changed my lifes direction. Sound like an evangelist, don't I.

My friend and I both have eye problems and spent many hours at the eye clinic.

Barbara had Macular Degeneration myself a field of vision fault caused by an injury in my motorcycle days.

Of the sight aids shown a white light lamp was the most useful and at that time Argos was selling them at reduced price.

For reading it was money well spent.

I now have many similar lamps in my workshop and they are good for Tig welding and detail work.

            Hi Ken,

I'm surprised you seem to have plenty of accomodation after the laser surgery … do you need reading glasses?
