        Jeff, Mike,

Thank you. At least if I cock up the machining I have a spare (or two).

Finally managed to make some progress on my set of castings. The pillar support just needs the upper arm fixing in place (this I think was pinned but I will Loctite and pin it) and drilling for the lower adjustment pin. The arms still require a .lot of work. I drilled the first one out to around 13/16", then bored it out prior to reaming it 7/8". It was an easy fit on the arm, so I bored the second one out to 0.872 rather than reaming it 7/8" (.875). This was a nicer fit.

First time using the boring head and using the automatic downfeed on the Gate mill. Worked brilliantly. I made a go/nogo gauge (.863/.873) and this made things a lot easier. Raising and lowering the knee by winding the handle (to check bore size) is not lots of fun but I intend fitting a power feed to the knee in the near future.

I am really pleased with the castings, the quality is excellent. Providing I don't make any mistakes my spare support arm castings should be available for anyone else that requires a set.

Looks good Colin, seems you are well ahead of me!

Regarding the 7/8” / 1.1/4” Post, is this one piece machined? butted in the Post Boss? or is the 7/8” sleeved to 1.1/4” for the mounting projection?

                    Regards,

                    Kevin H.

                      Kevin,

I used two pieces. A friend of mine came up with a piece of 35mm which I turned down to make the bottom boss. The top was a piece of 7/8" I had in stock. I bored the base out to just under 7/8" and then reamed it. Then bored out for the bottom boss at the 1 1/4". Reaming was a mistake as the reamer cut a little oversize so I had to cheat and Loctite pillar in place.

Making some progress with the Die Filer Castings (to catch up with Colin!) at last, next up is the manufacture of the

Delayed due to near completion of a G.H. Thomas Pillar Drill.

                            Kevin,

                            Looking good.

I have a GHT Pillar Tool. I think I started it about 12 years ago. I never found time to complete it. Had a base, pillar arms and table, but nothing else I think I will try and do some more before I start on an Alyn Foundry CHUK2 I have just sourced.

                              Hello and good evening,

I am restoring an Excel die filer, which came with the saw overarm, I have just purchased a set of casting from Colin, to make the filing supports,

I was wondering if any of you kind gentlemen, could please help me, under the base there is a large aluminium nut that covers the end of the vertical shaft at its bottom end,

I was wondering if you could help me, is there supposed to be a spring in the base, which pass up into the hollow shaft, when I look into the cap there is what looks like a witnesses circular mark, which is slightly smaller than the i.d.of the shaft,

If it is empty could you please let me know, if it should have a spring, to help lift the file/saw, could you please if possible its Diameter, length and wire Diameter.

Thank you for an excellent site, and thanks for any help you might be able to give.

                              Nigel Acton.

All my first batch of castings have now gone out to various people on this forum and MEM. I have been asked for a further set, so currently I am waiting to collect three sets of castings from the foundry, with one set promised this leaves two sets available to anyone who is interested. Please PM me for further details.

I see there is a Die Filer for sale on Ebay at present for anyone who may be looking.

                                  Regards,

Another set of castings has gone to another owner. I have one complete set left and one spare arm.

I have added photos below for Dave W who has had the most recent set .
