ER25 Collet quality

I have been browsing ebay with the intention of buying a set of ER25 collets.

The price for a set ranges between direct from Hong Kong US$26 to a few hundred $ for made in Germany.

I don’t have an unlimited budget, nor do I want to buy something that is only fit for the bin. On the theory that one gets what one pays for I had more or less discounted the bargains from Hong Kong and was instead looking at the “no name brand” mid-priced sets, but then it occurred to me that these may be the same sets as those from Hong Kong, just with a UK or US reseller’s profit added on.

So any recommendations for a reasonably priced set would be greatly appreciated.

 Give Chronos a try.  Set ER25 2mm – 18mm £83/set

I have yet to have any problems with their gear.

Not strictly speaking about ER collets, but if it’s any use helping you make up your mind – I have recently bought on eBay, (via my daughter in the UK), some gear from CTC Tools in Hong Kong. Namely a 50mm boring head with MT3 arbor and 9 boring tools (£60 including postage)  Arrived exactly one week after ordering, direct to me in France.  Also some end mills and a T-slot cutter  (£cheap – can’t remember how much).. I haven’t used any of them yet, but to my (untrained) eye they LOOK to be of reasonably good quality.  Doubtless somebody will come on the forum and tell me they’re made from low-tensile cheese!

Yes, you get what you pay for -but why pay more for the same thing?

Btw. why do you have to make a detour to England – is it forbidden in France  to order from Hongkong?

I have been bringing things in from HK and China for a while now, and found everything as good as you buy from most model engineering retailers, that is where they get a lot of their stuff from.

The import duty and the £8 that the PO charges to tell you that they need to be picked up from the sorting office does take the shine off some things, but still usually a lot cheaper than you can obtain here. If you keep the order below £18 (no need to include postage charges in that figure), they should be delivered directly to your door with nothing to pay. Not a lot to play with, but everything helps. I can get a fair amount of cutters or bits and pieces for that price.

No, you can import from HK to France, it’s just that I don’t have a PayPal account and I prefer to use my credit card to purchase on the internet, for security.  (CTC only accept credit cards via PayPal).

Anyway, France is famed for its cheeses, both high- and low-tensile!

I have a set of 6 ER25 collets, made in Italy, in a nominal Imperial sizes. These were a ‘mid-priced’ set and I bought them to give a good grip on Imperial shank milling cutters.

 

I also have a complete set of Hong Kong made nominal Metric ER25 collets, bought at a very reasonable price on ebay (CTC Tools). As far as I can tell there’s no difference in quality between the two sets.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice, I think I am going to give the Chronos set a try. They are apparently made in Taiwan, which seems to have a much better record for constancy than China.

I have a vertex set of er 25 collets and the collet holder with the myford nose fitting, around £100 the set from RDG, very good value, fairly accurate, use mine every day for the last 18months with no problems, i use the 8-9mm constantly for turning 8mm stainless 304 rod, putting on 50mm x 8mm x 1.5 thread on each end, collet still gripping truley after probably 2000 plus operations, well impressed!, Previously wore my Myford collet out after less than 100 op’s, and my Myford lever operated 8mm collet out after 40 op’s, and that bu**er  was a Hardinge collet !! cheers ,mick.
