can any one explain the difference between the various er collet types?

It really all comes down to the overall dia of the collet generally the collets largest dia is 1mm more than the ER size.(largest & smallest are different) 

 

As the size of thecollet goes up so does the max size it can hold eg an ER16 collet has a max capacity of 10mm while an ER 32 has a max of 20mm

 

And there is no such size as ER 23

Not quite sure what you are after,but this link (if it works!) goes to a couple of pages in the Pratt-Burnerd catalogue and will give you the sizes of various ER series collets.  Having said that, they don’t tie up with the set I bought with my mill.  Perhaps mine use Chinese mirrimetles!!

John there are some collets that are very similar to ERs that some of the imported sets use, sizes are on ARC’s site, you may have these

Yes.  It certainly looks like these are the ones I’ve got!  They may be non-standard, but they work OK so I’ll stick with them for now.  Pity ARC don’t have the ones I’m missing, or I’d snap up a few!

I have one Arc collet. It fits the ER25 collet chuck I wrote up for ME several years ago, as do all but one of several other second hand collets from various sources. As far as I can tell it’s on spec.

 

If I was doing it again I’d make the chuck a lot lighter, though thje extra mass makes it excellent for milling cutters.
