      Russell,

Perhaps I missing some important point, but: Would 'jigging' it not be a simple matter of turning a suitable 'stub mandrel' and clamping the collet onto that ?

That should work and provide one very accurate collet so it's probably best to use the largest sizes which is what most would do anyway.

The screw thread being out of alignment at either end will mess up the fit on the register one way or the other so in real terms is equally important. This is the main reason why the screw on chuck I bought wasn't any good. The register seemed to be fairly well aligned with the collet socket but the mounting thread was well out.

Yes, of course, but two turning jobs need to be accurate rather than one and the overhang is greater so any misalignment ihas more effect. I always believe in keeping things as short and rigid as possible, perhaps because my lathe is about sixty years old!

However . . . There is nothing to stop you mounting your collet block in a 4 Jaw and clocking true. You then have a system in which you can remove and replace items at will.

The point of a collet chuck is that you can fit it quickly and know that it is accurate with no messing about. I've nothing against collet blocks. I have a couple of them and find them very useful but wouldn't dream of using one to replace my collet chuck.

          Russell.
