Would a silicone spray prevent a metal (silver) hinge from sticking to a casting epoxy resin, or should I use something else? Niko.

Silicone may interfere wit the curing of the epoxy. Paraffin wax (solid at room temperature) as used for candles and home canning can be used as a "mould release" coating, and will not interfere with the epoxy cure, or bleed out of the hinge later!

If you melt some wax in a tin over a pan of hot water and dip / air cool the hinge twice you will get a thin but complete coating. Good luck with it!

Second that – works a treat – just comes in inconveniently large quantities ( 25liters) in my part of the world!

Any carnauba based wax works very well – used as epoxy lamination release on molds the world over..wipe it on, let it almost dry and buff it a bit – do a second coat and thats it.

If you can get hold of Meguiars Mirror Glaze wax – that would be perfect.

Where suitable,I've used brown parcel tape, the very thin stuff, as "non-stick" for resins. Works well, one big advantage being that there's usually a roll of it conveniently available in the house.

Thanks all! Lots of possibilities, I like the paraffin one. Niko.

I use DEVCON for bedding rifle actions into stocks. In order to ensure that I can get the two items apart after curing I first wipe the barreled action down with alcohol then brush all over with boot polish, leave 5 mins to harden, polish off and repeat. Never had a problem seperating two very expensive items.
