When I mentioned a while ago that I was thinking of starting to build the Strutt epicyclic clock, a few people made suggestions on cutting the internal teeth.

I seem to have combined some if not all the suggestions! This is my attempt, it has yet to be tried as I have a couple of problems to iron out.

      Comments/thoughts are welcome as always.

Sorry Bernard. This is a rig to enable me to cut the internal teeth on a clock which has epicyclic gearing.

It is clamped to the quill of my mill and has a home made cutter driven by a flexible drive from the mill.

            Hope this helps.

At the moment, I seem to have a slight twist on it which I'm trying to resolve.

Hi David, I take it the shown bracket / drive / cutter setup will be used with a dividing head holding the gear to be cut, all mounted to the mill? Looks good! Did you buy the urethane belt made to length or did you get the belt stock as cord and cut / thermal weld it together? Cheers! PS look forward to the next epic epicyclic episode….8^)

                  Looks good, David

You have basically re-invented a device which was available for ‘ornamental turning’ lathes yes

Thanks Jeff, yes, I bought a metre of the belt and hot welded it noted the length in case I need another 7 5/8"

Thank you Michael, I don't know anything about ornamental turning. It sounds like a rabbit hole too far

Whilst not directly related, there is an ornamental turner’s society I remember seeing the stand at ME Exhibitions.

PersonallyI found it very interesting watching the process.

Link here to their society website.
