I brought three volumes of Engineering Workshop Practice second edition at a book shop, they’re printed by Caxton.

I’ve looked over the books but can’t find a date when they were published.

I’m asking the question because some descriptions on lathes which describes and drawn as rather old-fashioned,but other detailed discriptions are rather modern.

        Bob.

I have the same work published by Caxton less the third volume, again undated but other related works by the same publisher are from around the late 1940s.

What's in the third volume, please?

I have the reprint of the fourth edition which lists publication dates for earlier ones on the copyright page.

                First Published – August 1936.

                Second Edition – August 1940.

                Third Edition – September 1947.

                Fourth Edition – March 1956

                Fourth Edition – Reprinted – August 1957.

The first 3 editions were by Arthur W. Judge with content updated between editions.

Fourth edition was revised by J.A.Oats and, so far as I'm aware has the most modern content.

Obviously not actually written by the stated authors. They merely collated, proof read and edited the content into a readable book. Content was specially written I believe. Unlike Machinery's Handbook you can actually read it as a book. Nicer in some respects but its not so good as a reference work.

                My Volume 3 covers:-

                1) Grinding Practice, 2) Miscellaneous Machine Tools, 3) Installation & Maintenance Hints, 4) Marking Out, Templates & Fixtures, 5) Surface Cleaning & Preparation, 6) Soldering & Brazing, 7) Welding Practice, 8) Simple Forge Work, 9) Sheet Metal Practice, 10) Simple Presswork, 11) Pattern Making, 12) General Iron Foundry Practice, 13) Workshop Calculations & Data, 14) Tables & Data,  Index for all three volumes.

                Clive.

I have the third edition Vol. 1. First published 1947, mine's a 1952 reprint, but 'feels' much older! Other dates in it are as Clive gives.

                  Hand tools

                  Engineering measuring and methods

                  Drills and drilling

                  Drilling machines

                  Practical lathework

                  Machining various engineering materials

                  Lapping and honing

Cleaning, polishing and protection of metals

Would be nice to pick up vols 2 and 3, although a lot of it is hopelessly out of date it's a fun read and clearly influenced by what illustrations were available from various manufacturers.

                  Neil

Can anyone list what is in Vol. 2?

                    Clive Foster:

Thank you for taking the trouble to list the contents of Volume 3; I shall put a note to that effect with my Volume 1.

One can only guess as to why the date was omitted at the earlier stage although they do include Caxton's own date of 1474 and an emphatic statement about the British origins of the binding, etc of the work! The second and third volumes more or less "book-ended" WWII and I wonder how far the wartime advances were reflected in Volume 3.

As to your good point about who wrote what, the note in my 1950 copy of the companion work Toolroom Practice says that Mr Judge wrote some of the chapters and had Messrs W Cooper, F E Dean and R Harries do the rest.

Incidentally, a J A Oates AMIPE, M Inst Met, wrote the MAP handbook Welding and Cutting; slightly different spelling but he might be your fourth edition writer.

My experience is that, unlike the US and Canadian model (which have always had publication dates printed), British books – of all subjects, were pretty loose about it (tending to omission) until about the middle of the last century. So this case isn't any particular surprise.

                        2. Broaching Operations
                        3. Milling Cutters and Methods
                        4. Milling Machines
                        5. Planing, Shaping and Slotting Machines
                        6. Engineering Machine Tools
                        7. Special-Purpose Machines
                        8. Plate and Bar Working Machines
                        9. Overhauking and Adjusting Machine Tools
                        10. Millwork and Machinery Installation
                        11. Templates,Jigs and Fixtures
                        12. Gearing and Gear Cutting
                        13. Engineer's Drawings

I had better add that my edition is described as "new and revised" and I have assumed this means the second edition. Oddly, the spine is in Arabic (2) but the page references are in Roman (II) – go figure!

Think you are correct about J. A. Oates also being the writer of the MAP Welding and Cutting Handbook. My mistake on spelling of his name in earlier post.

I have spare copies of volumes 2 and 3 of the1940 revised edition and also first three volumes of Newnes Practical Electrical Engineering (in red covers so presumably a later printing). All free to a good home. PM me if interested and we will sort out postage.

Bandersnatch makes good point about British books being fairly loose about publication dates. Especially with first editions. Often the copyright notice is dated but no direct publication date. Revised editions re usually dated. Reprints not so much. Books intended for reference were often a bit better than the general run of books.

Caxton and Newnes were the main publishers of this sort of work in the UK. I have most of the engineering and machine shop related ones from both publishers. Grinding, Lapping & Polishing is proving seriously elusive tho'.

The Electrical Engineering and Plumbing ones are the most eyebrow rousingly dated. Although the equipment in the welding ones runs them close the techniques are still pretty valid.

                          Clive.

I have got the 3 volumes of Engineering Workshop Practice, but I thought they were much earlier than the dates given above.

I was on the point of throwing these away, I have got plenty of other historical publications.Vol 3 has a torn spine. If anybody wants one or all of them then drop me a message.

I didn't know about Oxfam Online. They seem to have quite a collection of second hand books and aren't fools when it comes to valuation. Currently they have a 2nd edition of Snelling's "Soft Ferrites" which is correctly priced at £250. I have a copy I bought for £25 but most sellers are wise to the current value.

Must bear them in mind next time I'm looking.
