That's a really nice restoration Doc and a lovely book to treasure and not only for the personal reasons. Got me thinking – if I could only keep one book which would it be

      A difficult decison for sure

Very good question. I don’t know.

Im in the process of making (not really writing) a book comprising all my old photos from Formula 1 in the 70’s, ‘80’s & ‘90s, along with a images of all my old autographs, stickers, clipboards, cameras, stopwatches etc. I’ve got hundreds of photos, I was lucky to get pits passes for a few F1 test sessions at Silverstone, as well as attending the BGP from before I can remember, up to about ‘94. Great days from my ‘teens and 20’s. Thankfully I’ve treasured them and the negatives, and the advent of scanning and photoshop has meant a vast improvement in quality, and many images becoming useable through anti-shake and general clever editing tools available now.

In the year 1965, veteran and vintage racing car meet, Silverstone. Vehicle 1961 Austin A30 VAN going round silverstone flat out to get to paddock. Speedo swung between 20 and 70. Stopping quite often on the way home .

        why?

Push starting many cars all running on Castro R oil.
For those not not familiar it was the same stuff that grandma forced us to drink Friday nights to clear our bowels. It works! Sorry – no photos.

        Caster oil anyone?

Yes I’ve been to loads of VSCC / car club meetings, so know that smell very well. Not been to a meeting for about 10 years now. Really should go again.

A lot of the bike boys still use R as it has this phenomenal shear strength.

For anyone who may have an interest…..

Perusing ebay for books I came across this

                **LINK**

At £3.90 including post I thought it was worth forking out such a large sum and it has certainly proved worthwhile. 200 plus books to choose from with every page of each scanned and readable. Granted not all are of relevance but what a buy yesyes

Don't be put off by the cost – just because the outlay isn't much doesn't mean the contents are – thoroughly recommend the expenditure smiley

I’m very very slowly reading “The Science of Measurement, A Historical Survey” by Herbert Arthur Klein.

If you’ve ever wondered anything about how various measurement systems came to be, this book will probably tell you. It covers measurements of: Time, The SI system, Thermodynamics, Electrical, Pressures and Densities, Nuclear and Radiation. 736 pp, so it’s a little weighty.

What I was originally looking for was a history of how precision distance measurements were made. This book doesn’t cover this. But it’s got me hooked, it’s not a read for the faint hearted though, it’s somewhat dry. It is however accessible to those who don’t have a university scientific or engineering background.

(Lots of wonderful suggestions in this thread! Hopefully I don’t follow up on too many of them before I purchase a mill&hellip

In view of the recent forum discussions about units, and systems, of measurement … it’s worth looking at the reviews on Amazon UK **LINK**

The comments won’t reduce my interest … but they do set its context.

Could I suggest "The High Girders" aka "Disaster at Dundee, Prebble 1956. A good read that is a cure for hubris, a justification for quality management as well as providing the best response to people who say that software development isn't proper engineering because "nobody heard of a bridge version 2.0".

It also contains useful hints and tips for fixing faulty castings

1956 is when the book wa published. The disaster happened in 1879 I think

To quote the first verse from the great McGonagall's masterwork:

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!

Alas! I am very sorry to say

That ninety lives have been taken away

On the last Sabbath day of 1879,

Which will be remember'd for a very long time

Say what you like about him, were Shakespeare or Burns ever as exact regarding dates? it is all very well saying twelth night or midsummer's night but in what year?

                                  Hi Michael,

That is interesting, I skimmed through a few pages and added it to my books to read. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I’ve always wondered how mapping of a country or continent was originally done.

Your suggestion reminded me of “The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology”, by Simon Winchester.

I listened to this as an audio book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had never occurred to me before how fundamentally important geological maps were!

I’ve read a few Simon Winchester books and some of them almost put me off reading further books of his, but I’m glad I did read this one.
