A beautiful old engine with a remarkable history. Sad that it is being sold off so the hall can be used as a "cutting edge centre for well-being" by yuppie twits. But as they say, it is not original to that location so hopefully it will find a good home where it can be appreciated.

So they can use that room for public events…. they don't seem to suggest what sort of "events" and meaningless rhubarb like "cutting-edge centre for well-being" would be happy in Private Eye's Pseud's Corner.

It is a large engine, but I wonder if the owners investigated accommodating it elsewhere in the museum.

"cutting edge centre for well-being"? Surely that's a Model Engineering Workshop…

Exactly. What could enhance well being more than watching a Corliss engine that won first prize at the ;World's Fair in 18something chuffing away? That IS the quintessential definition of well being. See, I told you they was yuppie twits.

What a beauty! Would just fit lovely in my garden, but the wife wants the rockery extended.

Jesting apart – at least it's going as a unit and not being broken up / asset stripped. So fingers crossed it finds a good home..

                      regards Mike

                        Yes! Certainly is.
Being a suspicious type, could this be a cunning plan to enable them to get grants to up their profile?
I've seen other heritage attractions include educational facilities in order to get grants.
It could be an unintentional outcome if there was not enough of the original stuff left to make it interesting.
It's not quite the same if you say "this is where an engine used to be" or, if moved, "this is the old engine from"
Or, are they attracting attention to what could happen in order to raise funds to keep it where it is and build extra.
Let's just hope they know what they're doing.

Old buildings are expensive to maintain and there are so many 'heritage' attractions now that people only go to each one once. So most people who would travel to see it already have. They need to change the venue to one that has a lot of local people interested in going regularly. The general population and visitors of this south coast resort won't have the same interests as the inhabitants of Birmingham.
Examples: we sold our Victorian Anglican church hall to a Muslim sect, our extra 1960's church is being rented by a dance studio, the remaining church hall only survives because of the nursery and play groups. The local museum and art gallery only survives because of its cafe which struggles with multiple commercial offerings within 100 yards.

Well it is Brighton & Hove where 95% of yuppie twits live and return the only Green Party MP in the country. Why would they want a dirty, oily, smelly steam engine?

The Engineerium was a museum that was on my list to visit, sadly it closed before I could make it there, a sad loss to the world of engineering. Dave W

LOL. Nothing beats local knowledge. I didn't know that. Sounds about right.

Perhaps if we call it patinated instead of dirty, and aromatic rather than smelly it could have a cult following.

It looks like a very fine engine but was in the wrong place. Better would have been in a "good" museum in the north of England.

I hope it goes to a good home and, I feel, that it should go back to where it belongs, the other side of the Channel.

If you let it all go to rack and ruin, you then claim it is dangerous and needs to be demolished, bet the site is worth a mint for "redevolpement" !!

They got away with that on a 18th century canal warehouse near me. Scandalous. I'm sure they could have converted to flats, but cheaper to demolish and build new
