      Hi all,

I am designing a model four-stroke engine in single and four-cylinder versions. I am thinking about water cooling arrangements. Is it ok to have cooling water in direct contact with the iron piston liners; should I worry about corrosion and how would I seal the water-jacket/piston liner join?

The design has an allow cylinder block with cast iron liners.

      Many thanks!

      Alex.

Plenty of small IC engines run the water against the CI liner so should not be a problem.

Corrosion should not be a problem unless passages are very small, and add a bit of antifreeze to teh water which has inhibitors to counter rust.

Either press fit the liner to the cylinder, high temperature loctite of have O ring seals at the top and bottom of the liner.

Alex most of the English Electric 6/8/12/16 cylinder engines ran wet liners with no problems. They were sealed with 2 O rings at the bottom of the liner and a copper ring at the top.

            Regards Mark P.

The danger is electrolytic corrosion, but plenty of cars have that arrangement, which is why you need to put 'anti freeze and summer coolant' in, as it contains corrosion inhibitors. I suggest you do the same unless you drain the sytem after every running session.
