My workshop has been predominately Metric since the late 70’s. That is not to say I do not use Imperial cutters. These can come in handy when making a single point gear cutter.
Most of my cutters get reground at some time or another. As most of them are 3 flute centre cutting these days it is not so easy to determine the size. Thus if I want to produce a slot of a specific width a reground cutter with that width on the shank will be used. Slip gauges will tell me what the actual size the slot is after reaching depth. It is then just a simple case of moving over half the difference between the actual size and the desired size. Allowing for backlash of course, if you do not have the luxury of DRO.
