      Like most people I expect he will measure the width of slot that the “unknown” cutter has produced then offset buy half the difference each side to take the slot out to 10mm. You don’t need to know the diameter for that.

        My workshop has been predominately Metric since the late 70’s. That is not to say I do not use Imperial cutters. These can come in handy when making a single point gear cutter.

        Most of my cutters get reground at some time or another. As most of them are 3 flute centre cutting these days it is not so easy to determine the size. Thus if I want to produce a slot of a specific width a reground cutter with that width on the shank will be used. Slip gauges will tell me what the actual size the slot is after reaching depth. It is then just a simple case of moving over half the difference between the actual size and the desired size. Allowing for backlash of course, if you do not have the luxury of DRO.
