Hi all, just making the pump for Emma. This is a fabricated version and the author Henry says clamp components together for silver soldering.

What I am pondering on with this is how do you clamp parts together, obviously you need to in someway, and still have the joint clearances required for the solder to flow.

I have tried in the past, wiring things together but this has never been ideal as it is ok to hold the bits together but not very good at preventing lateral movement. (At least the way I did it, possibly my lack of expertise)

I assume if clamps are used they would need to be minimal size to reduce the heat sink effect.

If its two flat surfaces or even mating curved surfaces put a couple of punch marks in one which will raise a slight burr around the mark and hold the surfaces apart just enough for the solder.

I keep a couple of toolmakers clamps just for soldering as they get a bit rusty after heating a few times.

Don't overdo the clamp pressure as you can find that when heated the parts will bend especially if they are brass or bronze, just enough to keep them in place

Yes, read about that before somewhere, should have remembered that one.

            Thanks Jason.

Its ok to clamp it if its left undrilled. If you drill it first it will go oval..guess how I know.
