      Hi all.

Gathering my thoughts together with a view to building Emma. Looking at prices of various materials I see that gun metal is quite a bit cheaper than phosphor bronze. Would GM be ok for the cylinders or is PB much more preferable.

My source supplies PB in 1 1/2" but GM in 1 5/8" which gives a bit over for machining to the finished 1 1/2"

(I see from previous posts that some people are not only on with the build but keeping up with the series, don't know how they do it!)

      Many thanks.

      Regards

      Bill D.

Hi Bill, I too am building "EMMA" but not keeping up with the articles just enjoying the work as this is my first locomotive. I have gone with the gunmetal cylinders and used brass pistons and am happy with the result. I have noticed that as yet there are no drawings for the cylinder cross slider although the latest drawings show the part that fixes to it. I also have no wheels as yet, I ordered them 8 weeks ago from Reeves but they have not yet arrived. Happy building Bill.

Hi Mike, thanks for that. Interested in your comment about the wheels, I have been debating whether to go the steel or cast route, was leaning towards cast ones. Looks as if I need to get them on order. Also had same debate on the cylinders but when I saw the price of the cast ones decided on fabricated ones. Bill D

              Hi Bill,

have you tried "Noggin End Metals" for your gunmetal, he has it in 1½" at quite reasonable prices. I found that a 10 thou cut cleaned it up well for silver soldering and you can bore the end plates to suit.

              Best Regards

                Hi Bill and Mike,

I am fairly new to model engineering and recently saw Emma Victoria in the latest edition of Model Engineer (4459). Could you possibly advise me of the back issues in which this loco appears so that I can try to obtain them as it seems to be a good starter project.

                Kind Regards,

                Stephen B.

Hi Stephen, good job you asked because they are not always consecutive issues, so here goes.14 Dec 2012, 28 Dec, 25 Jan 2013, 8 Feb, 8 March, 5 April, 3 May, 31 May. Sorry this is a bit messy, my line spacing has stopped working for some reason. Bill

Hi Bill, thank you very much for the info, it's most helpful. I will now be able to see if I can purchase back issues of the relevant mags. I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to reply, but we have been away for a few days. Once again thanks for the help.

                    Kind Regards,

                    Stephen.
