EMCO Hobbymat Lathe

Hi Fellow Machinists,

I have in my workshop the above lathe, which has due to the pressures of work and travel little use. Does anyone have a copy of the operators manual or parts list for this lathe?

I am missing the dog that engages the lead screw and would like to see the detail so that I can perhaps make a new one.

The alternative would be to buy a spare if they are available, does anyone have a contact for spares?

Hi Pat,

1. For the record, the lathes marketed in the UK under the Hobbymat name have nothing to do with the Austrian EMCO company. They were originally manufactured in East Germany in Cold War days and subsequent production/sale has passed through various hands. This Lathes.UK page gives some of the history:

2. The most commonly found Hobbymat type in the UK was the MD65 depicted on that page — is that the model you have? If so, the manual (including an exploded parts diagram) can be found in the files section of the Yahoo Prazi Lathe and Mill Group here:

3. Alternatively, it can also be found in another Yahoo Group, Prazi Machining, which is rather more active — see here:

Note that in these groups the lathe is identified as the SD300 model. You'll have to 'join' the groups to get access to the files archives and this may take a few days. If you have trouble getting the manual, post here and I'll see what I can do.

Hopefully, some other members here have this lathe and can give more specific help on your query.

Do you still have the lever that engages it? Do you still have the other half of the dog with which it engages? I can't take a photo so here is a rough description:

It is a piece of bar about 1 in dia drilled to fit on the extension to the leadscrew as a running fit. It has a key slot to engage the key in the leadscrew to transmit the drive. There is a slot turned in it into which which a projecting pin on the engagement lever can go to move it in and out while still revolving. The dog clutch end is milled across the end to make two teeth that fit in the corresponding half that is fitted to the last changewheel that otherwise revolves freely on the leadscrew extension.
The key slot will be your biggest problem but the dog teeth can be made by pushing in two pins isntead of milling.

As Andy said the EMCO UK agent also sells the smaller hobbymat lathe and the mill so they should be able to provide you with spares.

Hi Pat, the links above are for the well known MD 65 Hobbymat lathe and its variants. The photo below shows the part which I think you are asking about, which is called a coupling in the manual and it's part No. is 3800-0211. There is no real detail about it in the manual.

There are more views of it in my Hobbymat Lathe Referb album. I may be able to measure it up and do a sketch of it in a couple of days or so if it is the one you mean.
