      Hello to forum members

I am a new member, hope i am in the correct topic to what i need to ask.

I am restoring an Emco FB2.

I have machined new nuts for the screws from phosporous brass

and now i am machining new gibs from cast iron (pics attached)

I would like to ask, can any help with the best choice of steel for the lead screws? Something that can give good machinability as also a good wear resistance? Somewhere i read that the 1144 carbon steel is a good choice.

      Can anyone help?

      Thanks in advance

      John

I don't think that cast iron is the right material for gib strips ! or so I was told in the context of a centec. Mild steel would be better. . Noel.

Leadscrews tend to be made by specialist companies with the right equipment and bought in by the lathe making producers

Not that many lathe makers also produced in-house leadscrews, it's a task requiring top notch equipment and capable staff

edit: …and yes, gib strips tend to be made of steel

I use EN8 if i can get in the size needed , cuts well and lasts
              better than free cutting steel.leadscrew.jpg

Hi John, have a look at this link Forum FB2 there are lost of things of interest and in particular the oldest post relates to feed screws for the FB2 FB2 Leedscrews on here they suggest EN24T

I cannot find it but some time back there was someone who made a batch of lead screws for the FB2 in metric only –maybe someone else will recall where ??

As has been suggested there are several suppliers of lead screws eg Leadscrews

                Regards John

                  Thanks John P, much appreciated!

Thanks also JohnF for the suggestions.

I did have find this topic with the member that have made this batch.

I have contacted my local suppliers, they don't have any screw with 20X3mm trepezoid.

Seriously, its not difficult for me to machine those screws.

Thanks for the link to the Fb2 forum.

                  John
